⛹ Andrew Rohde - Official Thread

I think it’s more talent deficiency than system execution deficiency. Tony’s elite teams were stocked with NBA/fringe NBA guys. Reece is fringe, Dunn will get drafted high, who else? Tony had an insane run of recruiting future NBA guys that were under the radar

Maybe we just have different hurdles for “great” or even “very very good”

Rohde is averaging ~3.5 3PA per game this year I don’t see that going up a ton given how many minutes he is playing, but let’s call it 4, roughly Devon’s senior year level. If he shoots 35% that’s 4.2 ppg. Without assuming some huge jump in his 2P productivity, which I think would require more raw athleticism than he has, you’re talking about a 7-9 ppg guy. Factor in adequate to adequate+ defense and his facilitation skills, and IMO that’s a good not great player. Or more simply put, I wouldn’t call Devon great or very very good. Love the guy, but that’s just not how I’d label him. I’d say very solid.

As to your downside (transfer) case, it’s possible, but I don’t see that happening either. We don’t have anybody in the pipeline now that is going to force him completely to the bench next year, and I doubt we target such a guy in the portal given other priorities. So unless he actually regresses next year (why would we expect that to happen?), why is he going to bail for his last year? Especially since there is literally zero chance we can recruit a 2025 stud at his position. Maybe there’s a scenario where Eli blows up so much next year that rohde sees the writing on the wall for the following year? But then is eli even around another year?

Clearly I’m bored. Next game please.

We love making snap judgments here. I’m old enough to remember that just a few weeks ago, we were certain that Jordan Minor was unplayable and a huge recruiting mistake.

Players develop at different rates and along different paths. Patience is often rewarded “in due time.” Tony obviously sees potential, and, yeah, I know, Tony is not always right, but he has a good enough track record that I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. I’m with Havs: Rohde will grow, will likely be successful, and I bet will have a critically big game (or two) for us before the year is out.

Think we are going to have to agree to disagree on Rohde but Devon Hall was 2nd team All ACC his senior year. Voted the 8th best player in the conference when it was actually good. If that’s not very good then idk what the point of any of this is lol

Ok I will concede the point

Edit: actually, I don’t entirely. 2nd team all ACC is not what I would call great. But it’s damn good. And I would gladly have Rohde be that good.

I think you are misremembering then. Those are both still absolutely true. In an ideal world you do not take a transfer at a position of major need who you then dont play for half the season as a one year rental. Tony was the one who was indicating he was unplayable by literally not playing him.

Jordan Minor didn’t emerge. He just didn’t fit with what we were doing and it took several blowouts to some mediocre teams to adapt and just play him. He was always capable of doing what he has done the last few games. It was Tony who adapted, compromised, and grew as he learns how to coach a team not experienced in his systems.

I think you are assuming others are not being mindful of the bigger picture and making snap judgements. Of course Rohde will improve, but there absolutely is a question to how much and how we endure the trade off of his facilitation in return for his 3pt shooting woes which in part seem to be mechanical and therefore not fixable this season. (but also could improve slightly with confidence).

Edit: also to add cause I then assume “negativity” will be brought up. Im having a lot of fun watching UVA the last few games. Through the roof at times.

Im really happy for Minor. I cannot imagine the psychological hurdles he has faced the last few months, and to still come out and perform as well as he has. It’s hard to go to a new environment, especially when your role becomes reduced and your confidence and ability gets questioned. Absolutely has been my most favorite player on this team with his play recently. I absolutely was concerned and am thankful I was dead wrong.

But this spring I hope we add a forward who can help us on opening day.

edit 2: since we are on the topic of assumptions: I just want to clarify I am in no way being spiteful or insulting towards you. Im mostly jovial

Dude, what in the world are you talking about?

It is absolutely not still absolutely true that minor is unplayable, as evidenced by the fact that he is now playing and playing quite well.

And as for whether he was a recruiting mistake, that is still very much tbd and certainly not absolutely true. If he turns out to be the difference between making the tourney and not (also still very much tbd) then he wasn’t a mistake. I would happily take a transfer every year that only played the second half of the season if he made a big positive impact on the season overall.

Jordan Minor is very playable. He should have been playing since game 1

I was talking about NjHoo talking about remembering when those remarks were made; back when Minor was not playing. (also a misunderstanding on your part). Those remarks are still absolutely true: Tony deemed him unplayable and then had to adjust and put him in. “I remember when people were saying Jordan Minor was unplayable” because he was in those moments. Maybe I worded it weirdly. The sentiment in those moments are still true even now when Jordan is playable and not only playable but vital.

I dont think Tony planned for his 1 year rental to be someone he goes to midway during the season when he has to sacrifice some of the things he deems necessary. That’s its working out is fun, but I dont think it should be intentional if it is a one year rental, even with adjustment curves and what not.

My man, there is no misunderstanding on my part.

Here is what you said:

At a minimum, minor being unplayable is not “still absolutely true” whether Tony deemed him so at the time the remarks in question were made or not. Perhaps the remarks were reasonable at the time. I felt the same way.

But that is exactly NJ’s point. The remarks were wrong and therefore we shouldn’t feel too certain in our views on distant future outcomes when a lot of us, myself included, couldn’t even accurately judge the future three weeks hence.

But that point being made is obvious, the future is unprecedented yeah. Those remarks were true in the moment.

Anyways this is a pointless argument because Im pretty sure none of us are disagreeing outside semantics. And it requires taking message boarding remarks seriously as opposed to entertainment, which is beyond my mental energy at the moment LOL

Were? perhaps. Still are (which is literally what you said)? Nope.

First off, Jordan Minor has been undoubtedly great these last several games. I’m thrilled we have him as a Hoo.

I think it may be a bit revisionist, though, to say he should have been getting similar minutes from the start. I thought that Jordan looked downright lost the first several times he played. Perhaps his lack of comfort was due to not playing, but more likely (in my opinion) it was that he was thinking too much and not just playing. Personally, I think some things needed to click for him. And once they did, he quickly established himself as a stalwart.

That’s absolutely fair. I think part of that overthinking was due to trying to get down the scheme. He still struggles with hedges at times and we also changed some so we dont do some of those things as often which helps with the overthinking and being comfortable. (I was screaming from the roof tops about simplifying with a young team as the breakdowns were atrocious)

I dont think Tony started playing Minor because he started getting the defense down. I think he started playing minor because we were desperate for any post presence and Buchanan being a little raw still. So much so that Tony was willing to adjust to get him on the floor. And it’s been really good since.

The only issue really with Rohde isn’t he hasn’t shot well. Kind of a duh statement. But if he were shooting a mediocre %, the rest of his game is good. And then that’s created a situation where he’s increasingly hesitant.

I just think it’s been a big adjustment, both in level and going from being a green light volume scorer to playing for a coach who preaches eliminate losing first. Shooting is where the lack of comfort/confidence shows up the most.

You could really see that with the three-pointer he hit against Georgia Tech. He looked like he didn’t want to shoot it, but his defender sagged off so far that he felt he had no choice.

He’s not alone. I think Groves and Taine turn down good shots too often, too. Fortunately, Taine overcame that tendency last night.

You’re a heck of a slouch.

Yep. He has tried hard to fit in. And to an extent he has
