We have a âveteranâ core and also had the italy euro trip and the extra practices. That helps sets the floor. Even with that we went toe to toe with a good illinois team full of transfers and 3 freshmen guards with very little chemistry, beat a Baylor team that may not be as good as preseason expectations but still really solid, and a michigan team that probably isnât good.
Im still incredibly happy with the results and am as hype as ever. Just in the context of a national contender do I bring these points up.
If we beat Houston at home that would be legit and I think we can if Reece is 100%
I still think we are a top 15 team but we clearly have a lower ceiling than these other teams especially as the season goes on and those other teams develop chemistry and players show out.
We will probably run through the ACC and be a high seed come tourney time, but in order to be a national title contender it will hinge on the development of McKneely and Dunn; two players who if they grow and become more confident raise our ceiling immensely with their talent.

Last year, per 538, top 8 pre tourney wouldâve been about 71%. I sincerely regret my error and whatever other awful things I may have done wrong by agreeing that I donât think we are a natty contender this year, in the above thread.
As a gesture of my sorrow, I will return all the money you paid me to read them. Good reminder that all of this is for entertainment value only.

At this point it really doesnât matter if we are 1 or not, except the the extent we lose to Houston it may prevent us from reaching #1 at all this year. If anybody cares about stuff like that.
But the truth is, even if Purdue is number 1 this week itâs not going to be by much and if we beat Houston on Saturday we will be #1 next Monday because at that point out resume will be much better than purdues and at least some Texas voters will flip.
So do we really care if we are ranked #1 instead of #2 or #3 this week when it wonât make any difference as to next week?

Funny you made me think. i dont think we are number 1 presently (mainly because of Reece!!) but I do think we are better than Purdue right now and beat them if we played. Therefore, I dont really know who should be 1. i guess UConn
You repeat those numbers as if they are fact. 71% chance means the other 60 teams would have a 29% chance collectively to win the natty and the actual odds for them would be around +330, with the offered odds being around +250.
I am just telling you right now, those odds are too high and I would take them in a Second as would lots of others if a casino ever offered them.

It is factual that those were 538âs** numbers pre-tourney (at least roughly, accounting for my bad math). What one chooses to do with those numbers is up to them. I havenât gambled on sports since you had to barter with the Costa Ricans so I have no particular opinion on that side of it.
** Also, I have no opinion on whether 538âs numbers are awesome, terrible, or in between. Just easy to google. Good SEO I guess.

Iâm glad the 6th week AP is more predictive because we are 9 in KenPom and barely top 25 for Torvik and Sagarin.
