Right but research money matters too. At least to the B1G. It’s basically the entire reason the question is ‘will the B1G dip into Virginia’ rather than ‘will the B1G take UVA or VT’
Even that occurred between when Nebraska was admitted and when they officially joined. They might not have been accepted if they lost AAU status first
Nebraska was in the AAU at the time of entry into the B1G. The AAU kicked them out several years later after Nebraska reorganized and their medical school was made into a separate campus so the remaining Lincoln campus didn’t do enough health research and too much agricultural research that didn’t weigh as much, so they were deemed insufficient for the AAU. Something like that. But the B1G didn’t admit a non-member.
I don’t blame Tony on Carla. It’s on Tony. Maybe the refusal to give in on a coach-in-waiting (which turned out to be a pretty good decision) pushed it sooner.
I do give her some blame for Bronco (debated by some but he’s been our best coach since Welsh) and BOC. I also blame her for the Tina hire and the Elliott hire. Mox with all that money isn’t looking great.
I also blame her for the absolute abysmal experience Scott’s has become and the decline in JPJ (again, someone let me know if that’s not her stuff).
Oh I did not know that at all. That’s wild, didn’t realize they would revoke your status lol
Yeah, research money matters too, but I didn’t want to go there because I have no idea what the impact of federal research grant cuts has had on us or will have on anyone in the future. But yeah, generally research ties and research grant money you can bring in helps some too. But the tangible benefit to the other schools isn’t necessarily immediately as apparent as increased tuition dollars.
“ So let me do my fucking thing”
Sure thing, Hoss. Don’t mind me….continue to boast about your aunties and dada and pop pop, and their incredibly unique achievements.
I’ve truly seen it all. And here I thought yellow dog was the most sheltered UVa fan on the interwebs.
Just a very, very minor clarification. Nebraska joined the AAU in 1909. It was voted into the Big Ten in June of 2010 and joined July 1, 2011. It was voted out of the AAU on April 10, 2011 and its last day as a member was August 31, 2011.
So I think we’re both right. I was wrong when I described the getting kicked out as being several years later though.
Nebraska was the first ever school to get voted out. Syracuse voluntarily left at the same time. I’m not sure if any other schools have been kicked out or left since then.
It is a long standing tradition at UVa not to call Phd’s doctor. It was always Mr. or Mrs. This dates back many years, and maybe it is not a tradition any more, but when I hear a non-medical person at UVa called doctor, it’s like someone calling our grounds a campus. So, I wish Mrs. Williams the best and I hope she puts our department in the best possible position for future success.
I am a younger grad (Class of 2020) so that may explain it, but it was never utilized the way grounds or first year/second year was. Those terms are ubiquitous with the culture of school and everyone uses them. In fact no one at UVA ever even told me about the Mr or Ms thing, I heard about that after I had graduated
I’m ‘17 and I had professors correct students that did it sometimes. I always liked it as a student, made my relationships with professors a little more friendly/casual.
It’s definitely one of our annoying things, but I appreciate this one and it definitely catches my ear when someone calls someone one at UVa.
When I arrived at UVa many, many years ago, students always used Mr., Mrs. or Ms. in referring to faculty. I’m not sure why or how quickly that changed, but gradually “professor” became the preferred reference. And it was rare for a student to use “Dr.” in addressing me. I have a PhD and I’ve personally never felt comfortable using “Dr.”
On a different issue, a former student of mine teaches at Nebraska and has told me the faculty receive a lot of pressure from the administration to bring in more research money so that they will become more comparable to other Big10 universities. She indicated the administration knew the Big10 had made an exception in admitting Nebraska to the conference despite their lesser research status.
The style guide at the newspaper where I worked stated that Dr. was to be used as a prefix only for MDs.

The line stops at doctorates in posterization
Still trying to figure out why you’re taking this and making this so personal. Personally, I like these boards because overall they’re a lot more rational and collegial than ones like the Sabre that tend to devolve into personal attacks and emotional outbursts. It’s really not that serious.
I was ‘99 and I remember using professor. I remember the Mr thing, but I don’t remember anyone actually saying Mr / Mrs, I just remember people talking about that being a thing.
Mr. J!
yea this is super interesting. UVA has a lot of peculiarities most of which everyone knows but not all are rigidly followed. During my undergrad the “non-negotiables” were calling campus “grounds” and not doing freshmen, sophmore but first-year/second-year etc. Those were the only 2 where if you didn’t do it other students would actually give you shit for it. Others like clapping for the professor on the last lecture or calling UVA “the University” were very inconsistent but most everyone knew about it. I’m assuming the Mr./Ms. thing was one of those, bc I legitimately never encountered that during my time there. In fact, I may have even first heard it on a message board lol
Gosh dang, I have a PhD from our fine university and you all have thought about this 2000x more than I have.
