Crazy conflicting emotions watching this. Absolutely gutted first and foremost.

Legit pissed know I told @Merch that last night in the chat and he said he didn’t quite get that. But I’m pissed. I’m pissed at the state of the game. I’m pissed at Tidewater Inn and I’m pissed at Tony cause it hurts. He’s someone who’s had a massive influence in my life and it hurts that he’s not going to be a regular part of it in this role.

I also am full of respect for Tony. I completely get the reason why he did it and I understand his why for the timing. It’s clear this is something while at peace with it, he is hurting and sad. Takes a strong competent man to know when to take a knee and he showed he had the wisdom of understanding of situation.

Really interesting comments about his desire for an assistant to take over when he retired. I think he just checkmated Carla after being told he wouldn’t be picking his successor

I always want to retire when I go on vacation, I get it.

We got more answers than I expected.

  1. The timing. That was because up to now he’s been too busy to take a step back and assess. Fall Break (and the cursed Tides Inn) gave him that opportunity.
  2. The reason. It was the new environment. He explicitly said that under the old environment he’d probably still be the right guy for the job.
  3. The future. He’d like to stay involved with UVA basketball! But he understands he probably can’t stay too close, in order to give the staff ownership.

We also learned that he’s been handing off ā€œnew environmentā€ duties to his staff for the last 3 years. And he felt like that meant they would better at this.

Yea athletes or coaches its the same. If you don’t have the passion and are not all in then it just doesn’t work. The job is too all consuming to do it half assed. Maybe he can be a part of the game in another capacity but given the way things are I think he’s done with walking the sidelines and he seems at peace and hurt by that which makes sense.

That was pretty damn good. He didn’t hold anything back. Completely open about his reasons too. No secret conspiracy, just burn out and not cut out to deal with all the extra bullshit that goes with the job.

I think the staff had really shielded him from all the necessary shenanigans as much as possible, which he alluded to. Just can’t be done completely. He’s pretty incredible to even think in the terms he put it, that they’ll be better off with someone who embraces it. Not sure I agree but still.
