Same, Belinda, same. Also, good to see you again just shame under these circumstances.
If I canāt have Tony Bennett as a coach, then I donāt want to live
Not sure if someone got to this already, but Rick Carlisle must have taken a short-notice flight to get there, as the Pacers played in Indiana last night:
I think thereās a No. 4 that weaves in all of those: In the current landscape, thereās no break, no time to be a good husband, good father, good friend. Itās 100% a business (billion-dollar business) and he no longer has the passion to continue coaching AND destroy his personal relationships.
The shame of it is that he would still be coaching if we had common sense in college basketball. NCAA botched it and once the horse left the barn, it was over.
First, Iām really happy for the guy and very much appreciate everything he has done and how he did it.
Second, Iām kind of pissed that the āenvironmentā pushed him to retire sooner rather than later.
Third, despite all of this, Iām excited about the future of UVA basketball.
Tony said clearly that he wanted to hand things off to an assistant whenever he retired. He also said he wouldnāt have done this if he wasnāt fully confident that the current staff and players could keep the success going.
I trust Tony and his plan for the success of the program he built. I think NIL era moved up his retirement timeline by multiple years. I think the 3 week before the season timeline is because Carla would not be guaranteeing an assistant gets the job.
I trust Tony more than anyone else involved in our AD and Iām actually excited about the future now because heās ensured his vision for the future success of our program is at least somewhat acted upon. Iāll take his judgement over anyone elseās in the AD.
Gotta respect the kind of humility it takes for him to do that. Obviously it seemed like he was getting some burn out, but also seemed like he just had the recognition that it would be worse for UVA basketball for him to stay. Hard to hear for me as a huge fan of CTB, and feels like it shouldnāt be that way. But hats off to him for having that kind of humility. All class
Yep thatās one of the things Iām pissed at. I never minded NIL and free agency it was just a part of the game until it came and bit me directly in the ass by causing Tony to decide to hang it up. Sucks and honestly I have no idea how they fix it.
Tony is the anti-corporate hero we need.
Youād be doing yourself a disservice if you didnāt check out the callaway AI smoke driver. I donāt know what your swing speed is, or ball flight, but I picked up 20 yards of carry by switching to the ai smoke TD. My DMs are open if you need a ball flight physics based shoulder to cry on. Unless youāre looking for irons. Canāt find shit I like there.
Hopefully folks donāt get tired of me saying this, but the 2019 Hoos were the last true college basketball national champions.
2020-No tourney
2021- Empty arenas, not knowing from one game to the next if thereād even be a game
2022 and beyond-Welcome to the portal & NIL
I donāt love the current game anymoreā¦havenāt the last 3 yearsā¦can only imagine how hard it was for Tony to live it every day.
Not convinced Sanchez is the guy long term, but will 100% support him the next 5āish months and hopefully beyond.
Bennett mentioned the two-year horizon for this team. Seems that Sanchez has two jobs in the next six months: (1) Win. (2) Keep embracing NIL and use it to retain the players we need to make a deep run in 2026.
Oh, wow. Iāve been there. We spent a couple summers in Irvington during Covid at airbnbs. Great massages, ok but expensive food, right on the water.
Take it you quit your job too?
Fortunately, we didnāt stay there or maybe I would have?
Sigh. Enough deflection. Right now Iām just really sad. But the presser was great, one last dose of CTB in his prime. And I also feel some closure from it.
Time to move towards acceptance.
Edit - And I got a f**king work call immediately after it ended. āHowās it going?ā āOh⦠uh. Great! Sure, yeah, Iām⦠why wouldnāt I be great?ā
Iāve been to the Tides Inn too. Nothing to do but sit quietly and ponder your own mortality.
Enjoy Arbyās
Man this place just got way too real and too sad
It was a good presser from CTB.
I did appreciate the perspective that the position was āon loan to him.ā And since he felt he could no longer be a good steward for it, he had the responsibility to give it back.
Giving stuff up/back is in the same level of difficulty as its much-more discussed cousin: saying goodbye.
