Here you go @buzby & @haney… Hardcore History was definitely discussed in here.
But I’m getting to the age where I can have the same conversation a few months later and it FEELS new.
Okay, so a bit of a trial balloon; if it’s just me, @haney, and @AdventiveQuasar we can always take it to DM.
I haven’t gone through the full catalog of either Hardcore History or Fall of Civilizations, but I’ve done a chunk of both. Y’all got any faves?
For me, HH Blueprint for Armageddon was incredible. Bought it for my FIL and I’m pretty sure he couldn’t figure out how to download. It’s behind the paywall, but the full catalog is so cheap I’m okay recommending.
FoC is a newer find for me. Probably listened through five or so episodes. Working through the one on Carthage right now and really enjoying it.
If y’all have others you loved, I’d be grateful for the recommendation.
Tides of History: Has gone through different seasons with different focuses that are kinda subtle to tell apart (at least on the Spotify app), so you kinda have to gauge where you want to jump in. My favorite is probably the season on the time between 1490-1520 in Europe (just always been a favorite time period from a historian’s perspective), which ended up becoming a book by the host, the Verge.
Revolutions: Mentioned earlier, but the French Revolution season is a classic, the Haitian Revolution might be even better (partly because I just knew less about it going in), and the Russian Revolution season is a testament to the host’s stamina. Current season is speculative sci-fi about a future Martian Revolution, which I am enjoying as sort of an end-of-term test reviewing concepts from all the past seasons.
Ones and Tooze: Not exactly history, more current events, but Adam Tooze is a powerhouse of political economy analysis. Just did a mini-arc on the economics of World War II, which was fascinating (and kinda bleak at times).
I found FoC on Easter island and also Bagan pretty fascinating. Vijayanagara too. I feel like his coverage of areas I know/knew very little about is often my favorite. His video episodes are pretty cool, too.
Love Revolutions but have decided to skip the odd Mars discursion.
Catching up to Tides of History now. I’m like 18 months behind. I really enjoyed his prehistory stuff because I knew basically nothing about that subject.
I’ve listened to Fall of Civilizations since the beginning just because I happened to randomly follow him on Twitter. Good podcast. It’s kind of funny though. When he started, the episodes were like an hour long and now they’re the length of a small book. Sometimes takes me months to get to. I still haven’t gotten to the latest episode from December.
If anybody here is a tube amp guy (extremely doubtful, I know), this is the shit:
The Truth About Vintage Amps
Another good one in the history genre: Latest Episodes - The Rest is History
And if you are interested in espionage, the sister podcast The Rest is Classified is pretty awesome
Your favorite history podcasts are all talking Persia (from different angles, but counts)
- Fall of Civs (this, Achaemenid Persia)
- Tides of History (Alexander the great about a year ago)
- Hardcore history (Alexander about to invade Asia
in current series, plus some King of Kings stuff from a few years ago)
