Blue/White scrimmage discussion

Just a guess, but think we could see a Gertrude redshirt this year. I grimaced every time he fell. Give that knee a ton of time and opportunity to learn how to play in this offense.

Also agree we shouldn’t shirt ARob.

yeah Gertrude showed flashes but also showed that he is behind. One of the times where I wouldn’t be as frustrated with young talent not playing. But the flashes show he could be special.

And just like you and I already said, Robinson needs to play (ill begrudgingly accept the redshirt). Groves impressed me some.

Also I just saw @brogdonfanpage tweet and I literally had that exact thought in real time LOL “our starting lineup should be Reece McKneely Bond Dunn Buchanan”.

I think this team is a hybrid of 19-20 and 2013-2014. Both teams lost games in the ooc but trended upward in February and March. I dont think we will beat Florida and Texas A&M at home might be a Wisconsin UVA 2013 40-30 game. But I do think we can win the acc at the end.

Rohde could be the NBA style “2nd unit scorer guy”, if that makes sense.

Florida is down 2 guys, which should help. And you don’t RS Gertrude because of what he could be in a few months… (amongst all the other reasons)

He must have had 3 steals…

I think people are/will overreact to the actual shotmaking, but in 28 minutes of gameplay the shooting sample size is gonna be way too small.

Beekman: looked awesome, on both ends. A couple more fouls than ideal but his midrange game looked really good. Very assertive too.

McKneely: won the 3pt contest, then seemed to he a little short on some of his shots. He had a couple nice little drives and passes too, more than he showed last year. Also better defense, but wasnt put in many difficult positions.

Rohde: Really liked the ballhandling and the passing. Shots didnt fall except for a couple, but he generated good looks for himself. Also looked decent on defense but like McKneely not really in any stressful situations. He’s going to be a top 3 scorer and i wouldnt be surprised if he was #1.

Dunn: looked awesome on defense and very confident on offense. Loved his playmaking. He’s way more assertive shooting the ball.

Minor: pretty much as expected, he’s a garbage man. He looks big though.

Harris: Not as impressed as many on here, didn’t generate many good looks and didn’t finish at the rim consistently. He’s super super quick though and he defintely has a role on this team.

Bond: He looked awesome on both ends. Really not much more to say. He reminds me of Justin Anderson a little bit. Love his relationship with Bond.

Groves: As expected. Good shooter. Not much else. Needs to use his size better.

Buchanan: Impressive at times, out of position once or twice. But im excited for his potential.

Gertrude: Loved the defense and the rebounding. He plays much bigger than his height. Offensively didnt show much but i like the form of his shot.

Taine: Did was hes supposed to, and he put on a show in the 3pt contest.

Bliss: Really impressed with Bliss. He didnt look like a high schooler. Very excited.

Robinson: i can see the potential, and i can see why he may redshirt. Some very nice plays but also clearly raw.

15 but I wasnt there

Taine almost won the 3pt contest and then the scrimmage happened and I forgot he existed until you mentioned him here lol.

I think the MVP of today was helpside D in general. Going from non-existent to Bond Dunn Gertrude Buchanan Robinson and even Reece coming over and blocking shots that looked wide open when they drive or going up was initiated.

I still have Rohde trust and Dante can get to the rim quick and draw fouls (drew 2 on Reece on drives) but Im still waiting to see that 2nd initiator (McKneely be assertive? Dunn assist numbers a sign?).

My notes are below:

Robinson - huge and can jump out of the gym, not sure he should redshirt

Blake - Looked fine to me defensively, honestly would start him over Minor if game was tomorrow.

Gertrude - looked young and cautious, makes sense coming off the ACL

Bliss - meh. He’s big. looks like he’ll be pretty good once he figures it out. Shot looks busted tho

Groves - surprisingly liked almost everything I saw. Moves well for his size and I think he’ll shoot better than BVP

Dunn - dude is gonna be an absolute aircraft carrier on defense. Offense is still a work in progress but there’s some stuff there.

Bond - Looks good offensively. Not sure what the comp is. He’ll be good on D.

Harris - Tasmanian devil. Probably just as quick as Kihei and an inch or so taller but with half the restraint. He might be a game by game “let’s see how he looks” guy. He’s gonna make shit happen (both good and bad).

Reece - He’s Reece. Shot looked good in the 3pt shootout. Not enough space for him to operate but he was continually making winning plays per usual.

McKneely - ehh. Not much to take away. Didn’t look super aggressive. I’m sure he’ll be fine shooting wise but didn’t exactly look like a guy who was ready to be a top 3 scorer on this team.

Rohde - didn’t know what to think. I had/have high expectations and he didn’t exactly meet them. Tony said they played 40 min of scrimmage before they came out to play for real so he might have just been gassed (he was really really sweaty from what I saw, conditioning might be an issue). I think he’ll shoot well but he doesn’t move quite as well with the ball as I expected. Slight chance he’s just like Armaan.

Minor - I thought he was jumbo Jayden Gardner but he might be more like Walmart brand Braxton Key. I think Blake should start over him.

Taine: never know what to think. Maybe he can shoot this year but I just don’t think he does enough well enough to crack the rotation

I wish I was there but from reading everyones stuff here it tells me that we a team fully bot in on defense. When you play each other that way defense stands out and offensive prowess gets suffocated

Said another way: players know what TB wants and players wanna play

Also sounds like Leon may be way ahead of what I would have expected. Thankfully I was very wrong about RD and his readiness last season

However, this is the look of a pro

Edit: 2 pros

Yeah, the only thing I’ve been concerned about with Harris is his shooting, because we desperately need shooting from our guard positions. While everyone shot poorly today, other guys have shown stuff before. He’s a career 26% three-point shooter and went 0-3 today so nothing about my priors has really changed (yet!). But glad to hear he’s a menace on defense, which is what I think most of us expected.

Ryon Dond (or Leann Bunn). Now to be fair, that nickname stinks, but its streets ahead of “Fish”

Dante Reece Gertrude Bond Dunn. Furman becomes the first team in NCAA basketball history post world war 2 to go scoreless in a game. 100% book it.

I dare a team to go small ball. DARE THEM. Would unintentionally mean letting us play our best front court pairing.

Kinda cold takes by now, but:

Dante is definitely gonna get minutes. He’s a nightmare for ballhandlers – in fact he was pissing Reece off. The two of them will get some pick-sixes this year. But then Tony will yank Dante because of his dumb turnovers on the offensive end (driving into trouble or generally getting out of control). He plays like his hair is on fire. Coach Mox would LOVE this guy.

Bond looked smooth on offense, all three levels. Forget buying stock, buy Bonds! Haha! Hahaha! You’ve been a wonderful crowd.

On the women’s side, Kymora was easily the standout. No freshman jitters, seemed very poised, sliced through the defense repeatedly. Whichever team had her on it was going to win this scrimmage.

And of course by now we’ve all come to expect that Coach Bennett will find some new way to “bring the razzle-dazzle,” as he puts it. This year it was a 3-point-shooting contest. Next year I expect he’ll add a slam dunk contest. The man is a natural showman, he just can’t help himself.

Official motion to refer to people who complain all season about not seeing bond/Dunn at the 3/4 as “Bunnhurt”

You can take us to Dond-a Academy

Annual disclaimer to not read too much into the Blue/White scrimmage!

Hunter looked like shit before the 2017/2018. His absence in March Madness is why we lost to a 16 seed (among other reasons).

Proceed with caution. That is all.

Any fun moments that you definitely won’t see in actual games? À la Jack Salt behind the back dribble from either ‘17 or ‘18?
