My takeaways after reading all the posts:
- We have returned to being a top 10 defense
- Our offense struggled at times against a top 10 defense
- We should probably never run a really hard 40 minute practice just prior to a game
My takeaways after reading all the posts:
I’m in on running Reece, IMac, Bond, Dunn, CENTER as just being crazy athletic defensively
Jacquie has a lot of video of the scrimmage in her link
Not sure what I’m doing wrong but there’s no video at the link just adds for a podcast over and over
Hmm that’s weird, it played for me after the ad ended. I’ll keep an eye out in the off chance they post on their YT channel
True. But we also got reports from practice performances, which seem to line up more closely with what we tend to see when season starts. I do think blue white is valuable somewhat for early season expectations. But it always feels like the offense looks choppy and defense looks solid in these scrimmages. At least as far as I can remember. The Bond stuff seems encouraging. But like, should I put stock into that if iMac was 0/5? I dunno. Just hard to interpret.
Matt Newton’s highlights
I believe all three of his 3s were desperation heaves at the buzzer.
Well that is helpful context! So might not mean much.
Now, the fact we kept getting in late shot clock situations might mean something…
I like the idea of dunn playing the five and making teams really have to decide whether they feel comfortable staying big or forcing them to adjust. One of the things I’d like to see is uva dictate the matchup instead of reacting.
When was the last time we had this much young talent to be excited about? If probably won’t all come together this year but it’s so cool to see the end of our depth chart filled with super high ceiling guys. Pretty stacked for the future assuming we get production on the wing and the front court guys develop
Not even trying to be hyperbolic but that Buchanan fadeaway tells me he is going to be special. That looked so natural.
Good clips here. I liked Bond’s form on his jumper.
Also, it does feel like iMac changed his form again. Maybe I’m wrong, but it feels higher and quicker than before, but like he’s still getting 100% comfortable with it.
First game is tomorrow:
Who do you want to start next to Reece and McKneely?
Who do you want to start next to Dunn in the front court?
Should Anthony Robinson redshirt?
Reece!, iMac, Bond, Dunn, Groves. Lets do it.
Did either Dunn or Bond look like they have the handle to play the 3 with guards pressuring them? Everyone talks about defense but ball security is Tony’s other non-negotiable
Dunn plays like a guard on the perimeter. Bond plays like a 4 man offensively. The kind that can fake a hand off and drive to the rim for a slam.
Handle looked better than last year but still a “wing forward” more than a guard. Idk if that makes sense
I’m not sure iMac looks comfortable handling the ball with a guard pressuring him. Eh.
Edit - The point being, we know CTB loves ball-handlers, but expecting that level of comfort is expecting 3 PGs on the court at a time, which might be a bit much.
Guess I didn’t word the question well lol I’m not asking if either looked like Devon Hall or something. Didn’t mean pressure like breaking a press or anything. Just enough to run our offenses. In high major ball there’s pressure put on the ball handlers just running half court sets. Dunn was not comfortable against that at the 3 last year. Think how Dre wasn’t there in 17/18 versus 18/19 when he was. That’s what I was trying to ascertain
I was not expecting either Dunn or Bond to be there this year. If RD is there it’s a significant ceiling raiser
