Nice. Dana Barros was great for BC, too. Which makes him an ACC legend
Hahaha. Good one
In general. As I look at his highlights his body language appears to be very similar to C Edwards. His fearlessness to pull up and take a shot without hesitation almost anywhere across the half court line. He just has ice water in his veins. It’s the best comp I can think of as I look at his film.
To add another point. I don’t care about his height. He gets into the lane with ease… He is so quick he will be impossible to seal off the lane against. Part of his game is his ability to assist and make good passes.
Now imagine him getting into the lane and setting up our snipers on the perimeter.
This convo made me look up Carson’s NBA tryout measurements. I am surprised to learn that he has a 6’6" wingspan. He’s 5’10.75" without shoes, 6’0.25 with shoes. That being said, I like y’all’s comp!
While Edward’s NBA measurement is interesting we would need a Mallory NBA measurement to truly compare.
I’d most compare him to Markquis Nowell.
Interesting cause I don’t see that at all. I think Keyshuan Tillery is like Nowell.
In my mind I still think of him as a Kyle guy type (even though different size and stature) as a more combo-shooting guard off ball offensively but who can also playmaker.
Idk, I just watched some Nowell and that similar range, willingness to shoot whenever, and then toughness around the rim. Nowell was a more polished passer later in his career - but that’s who I see.
How does he compare to that small dude for Miami some years back?
I see them compared because of their size but I see different players. Lykes played at a breakneck speed and Chance is much smoother looking imo. I’ve seen Mallory compared to Carson Edwards, and I think stylistically that’s a decent comp, though he’s a bit little shorter. I think Lykes was listed at 5’7 which means he was really like 5’5. Lykes did a helluva lot with his size though.
Lykes is also like Tillery and Nowell. More Downhill/better at getting to the rim and more floor general game. None of the three are close to the 3pt shooter Chance Mallory is. Nowell shot like 33% from 3 his last two seasons at KState. Would be surprised if Mallory is a sub 39% from 3 shooter here. (especially when he wont have to chuck as much).
Yeah I mean we don’t really know what Mallory will shoot here but I expect it’ll be significantly better than 33% - I still think stylistically they’re very similar.
I get the Edwards comp with play style too… but I do think the size matters such that Chance won’t just be pulling up and shooting directly over as much length as Carsen could and that matters.
There’s a Nowell highlight reel from the NCAA tournament run that just reminds me so much of Chances style. He’d opt to pass more when driving (I think Chance will do that more at this level too) but still had the ability to get shots off inside you didn’t expect through contact and would punish defenses by pulling up from anywhere.
Lykes? Or Larkin?
What about Isaiah Thomas? He wasnt a lights out shooter in college but in the NBA he leveraged his shooting to become an elite scorer for a couple years.
Mallory’s release is definitely quicker though and he does get into his three more off the dribble so idk.
Maybe there really isn’t as clean of a comp as there are elements.
Yeah, your last sentence covers it for me. I’ve said before that we’ve never had anyone look like him and I don’t see a clean comparison. I’ve even seen a comparison that maybe 3 people on this site would remember: Calvin Murphy of Niagara.
Its Carson Edwards. Keep it simple
Great point that he shoots threes of the dribble. Is why I dont see the Kyle Guy comparison (but I get it)
I for one, am enjoying “Remembering some guys - Sub-6FT Edition”
I’ll add a couple more:
Kay Felder
Chris Clemons
Jerome Randle
Jawan Carter
Levance Fields
Josh Akognon
Kay Felder gave us 30 points when we played Oakland in 2015. Awesome player, issue was he was all they had (outside of Max Hooper the guy who refused to do anything but shoot 3’s).
Also throw Keifer Sykes in there, guy from Green Bay. Not a good comp for Mallory but a great player nonetheless.
