That bank shot that Carsen made was just symbolic of his game that day. We had several players try to guard him but it didn’t matter. He was making everything that night. Only Fresh could have held him intact
Did we ever foul him hard that game? Nope
No we didn’t. I was right. You are the only one that could have stopped him
My man
This is an excellent rubric and I’ve been thinking along the lines of this recently.
I would say you can give Kyle credit for being able to create for himself. Even if he didnt have the ball, he was great at getting open off of screens. He also needed such little time and space to get his shot off compared to other shooters. I think that ability falls under the create shots for yourself category.
Maybe, but I think we’re all getting a bit navel-gazey on the Mallory comps. It’s not hard to find guys from the past that set a bar he likely won’t clear.
Edwards was a great player, and an otherworldly one on the night most of us lived through on pins and needles. It was truly mythic and I can’t trust my own abilities to evaluate him as a comp for anyone with anything remotely close to reason. Someone said Steph, who is objectively better, but for that one night Edwards was goddamn Superman.
I’ll buy that the extra length is a differentiator, how big is TBD. But I think there are a few things worth remembering about Mallory that are all positive.
-
he’s ours, and with added height and length very well might not be
-
he brings skills that folks have been clamoring for on this board for years
-
his height might keep him here for the full four years which adds a lot of value
-
aside from his height, I’ve not heard of any material question marks. Only plaudits from folks who know way more about Mallory the player, Mallory the person, and basketball in general than I do.
I’m on the bus and will be happy to get navel-gazey on comps when his time here is done.
Part of the reason Mallory’s comp for me was Carson Edwards was more than just a talent comp. And I do think there are some comps there.
But it also had to do with just his overall demeanor and his like … ‘let me take this game over’ attitude
By the way I decided to rewatch the Purdue game last night. Kiehei played an amazing game AND he was on Edwards at the end
I didnt realise how good 1st year Kihei was that night in such an amazing game
Kihei was great for most of that tournament, saved our asses in the Oregon game.
I feel like I need to re-watch that natty run every six months just to remind myself how f*cking incredible it was. I can’t believe how lucky we are to have experienced that as a fanbase.
I think this is the healthy way to search comps. Probably came in a bit too hot on the subject, but I’m more bristling at the phenomenon of scrutinizing what these guys aren’t rather than what they are before we’ve seen them on the floor.
I’m pumped about Chase and if he’s a reasonable facsimile of Edwards, we’ll all be thrilled.
Agree on a lot of the traits being similar.
The Mamadi pass v Purdue was the highlight of his career, but the Oregon game is where he shined the most.
Yeah there is zero chance he ends up 1st Team All Big Ten.
Give him his flowers
My enduring image of Kihei is him shooting eye daggers at the opposing staffs who had just dared him to shoot, after he just buried one.
Kid had moxy. All jokes aside loved that even as a first yr on a veteran team he played with swagger and didn’t back down
Am hoping Chance can make a similar impact for the 2025-2026 team, albeit with a different skillset.
I loved Kihei. Gave everything he had every time out.
And as long as we’re reminiscing on indelible Kihei moments, getting Amin to foul out in crunch time against Oregon is an all-timer for me. Such a smart play to send that instigator packing.
I think that’s a really key point. It’s almost impossible to see him going pro early even if he’s averaging 20 a game.
