šŸŽ„ Christmas Time

Of course… funny memory from me… Stomping at the Savoy by Chick Webb was one of the audio identification questions on a test in my history of jazz class at UVa. Our instructor said only a few people got the question right when we reviewed the exam the next week! Haha!\

My son’s are currently both in love with swing and new age improvisation… they’ve been playing classic Christmas songs using swing and a lot of ornamentals throughout.

One of my favorite jazz songs is Song for my Father due to the South American influence from the Horace Silver quintet… played this with a few of my friends at a concert in HS… we did not sound this good though.

Interesting. When I think Brazilian, I think Antonio Carlos Jobim or Flora Purim. :sunglasses:

Gilberto… what did we do before Google? Encyclopedia Brittanica?

I was just preparing to type ā€œJoao Gilbertoā€ when you posted this. Of course, I just pulled a CD off the shelf to find the answer. Google didn’t occur to me. I guess that makes me an old fart!

I’m DJing the Haney drive to the in-laws. Any ideas for actually good Christmas music?

We are listening to Percy Faith now… is that the list?

You say that like Sufjan Stevens’ Christmas album isn’t the obvious choice.

Who did you have for that–we are many years apart but my professor was a young guy back in '82. I loved that class–our ā€œtextbookā€ was the Smithsonian Collection. I wore those albums out!

Scott DeVeaux… i asked him to be my thesis advisor because my thesis was using MIDI. He declined telling me he knew nothing about computers or computer science. fantastic jazz pianist however.

Ended up having to convince Thomas Hutchinson in the Systems Engineering department to be my advisor even though he knew nothing about MIDI.

That’s who I had. He was great. Did the best impersonation of a hotel lounge jazzman on piano.
