🎠 Coaching carousel - 2026

Not sure where to put this but I just read where our new incoming assistant coach and former Syracuse head coach Adrian Autry has extensive experience playing in almost every country in Europe. I wonder if he has some good connections there? A couple of more Thjis and Grunlohs couldn’t hurt our team.

Scheyer might be good in the NBA. Doesn’t seem to have a massive ego like K did, so could get along with high priced talent. Good personnel guy, clearly, if his recruiting is an indication. Seems like the sets they run at Duke with all of that talent are more NBA-like. He’s not really a system guy. Who knows tho? I don’t see him leaving Duke, why would you? The talent just shows up at the door and all he has to do is open it.

My friend, a diehard Duke fan who worshipped at the altar of Coach K, was calling for Scheyer’s dismissal the day after they lost. I suspect he wasn’t alone. Scheyer may not want to leave, but he may decide it’s not worth the pressure coaching for fans who are never satisfied.

Kinda my point. You cant measure an IQ but I can analyse what I see

Bingo. Has been happening fore years as you said. Its like teams just play and dont adjust to situations then look to see what the score is when the buzzer sounds.

I watch UVa and care about Virginia so I dont have huge opinion on other teams. Til I do! Hahah

Insane. Scheyer has been a better coach than K was from 2017 to his retirement. Just goes to show you how much weight losing poorly has.

I have one of those Duke friends too. Not calling for Scheyer’s head but is concerned about the model that relies on recruiting the number 1 or 2 class every year then filling in with a couple portal pieces. Basically a continuation of K’s last years (minus the portal) that resulted in good but not championship seasons.

You miss on your top target, you’re screwed. Duke without Cam or Cooper is a pretty average team. Your top target turns out to be Josh McRoberts-like you are also screwed.

His wish, for what its worth, is that they’d recruit top 50 guys that’d stay 2-3 years and pull a high end portal piece or two every year. So sort of a 180.

I now feel ill after writing that much anout Duke.

I think it’s fair to criticize Scheyer for many things but the roster builds the past two years have been on point.

He’s got a good mix of multi year guys they recruited (Ngongba, Foster, etc), One and done top 5ish talents, older multi-year portal guys (Maliq Brown), and one year portal guys that fit key roles (Gillis, Sion James).

I guess Michigan will win the debate of who had the better roster, but it’s pretty close.

They’ll always have DC I guess

That Michigan roster is a work of art though. Basically a home run on every transfer.

Yeah, the notion of deliberately recruiting guys who aren’t as good so they will stay longer and then expecting them to win championships AND stay on longer doesn’t make sense when said aloud.

Our ‘19 title team all were a bit lower recruited, developed over 2-3 years, and the core group left with eligibility still remaining. Winning a natty is hard.

probably not worth the continued discussion because i bascially agree with you…but i think his point is putting all your eggs in the top HS recruit basket is a risky strategy, you use a ton of NIL and if they don’t perform as expected you are in trouble. Maybe BYU is a good example of what he is talking about. I don’t know I guess I do see the logic of not tying your fortunes to the top HS guys every year, but it also doesnt make sense to turn away 3 or 4 five stars if they want to come.

I have a Duke fan friend that called for Scheyer’s firing after the UConn loss because he was tired of E8 losses. I thought that sounded insane.

I agree with this, kinda, but it feels like an odd criticism when the risk explicitly did pay off for two straight years. The problem has been either/both (1) luck, or (2) other aspects of Scheyer’s coaching

Separate and apart from Scheyer chatter, the lesson for me is you need top end talent.

Recent history suggests the best teams are pressing all the buttons to acquire that talent. Just to pick some guys from final 4 teams:

  • get top HS recruits (Mullins, McKenny)
  • Get HS recruits that wind up being awesome (Wagler)
  • Get and keep long term guys from HS (karaban, Ball)
  • Get the top guys in the portal (Yax, Cadeau, Reed)
  • Get key role guys in the portal (lil Peja, Demary)
  • Get good international guys (all the guys on Illinois)

And don’t over-rely on one strategy.

As a Virginia fan and a Duke hater, I say with full confidence that only good teams win those Elite Eight games decided by a flukey last-second play.

As of a week or so ago, I figured they had a soft / unofficial yes from Lloyd or Donovan. And I figured it was Lloyd. So if I’m being consistent here, I still think there’s a good chance it’ll be Donovan, but I also think there’s now a material chance of fiasco, which is always fun, especially when it’s UNC…

The fact that they’re waiting and not moving now to plan B or C or whatever for the moment still has me betting on Donovan… if it’s not Donovan, I assume something will happen tomorrow or the next day or two…

I don’t think they wait for Donovan’s timeline if they don’t have reasonable certainty they’re just dotting i’s and crossing t’s after the NBA season.

The added fun of a domino effect if the Heels get Donovan and then the Bulls offer Scheyer is too good to resist.
