I’m tired of it, too. But him tweeting this makes me feel like he shouldn’t call our games, at least the rest of this year. Too much baggage. It’s clear he’s not going to let it go. No one will be happy with the arrangement.
From film I totally think I agree with you BUT Cory and that imposter “Dougie Fresh” were exactly in front of the play and saw it off of Blake
Your eyes lie to you all the time as a non famous dude once said
Yeah! What was up with that?
What Cory should have said:
“It was never my intention to influence the game. I was sharing my personal opinion on the broadcast (which is my job), when the ref overheard me. He then asked me directly if they got the call right, and in the moment it seemed natural that I answer with my opinion. In hindsight, perhaps I should have declined to answer, and said merely, ‘That is up to you.’ To be clear, however, it is the refs who ultimately made the call, not me. Regardless, I regret becoming a distraction from a well-played game by both teams.”
Cory made eye contact with the ref across the court and pointed to his monitor. Then he proceeded to describe how he they had a better view than the refs and the call would likely be overturned within earshot if the refs as they looked at the broadcast replay.
Two things are true:
- if a ref asks a broadcaster for a 2nd look, it’s okay to provide it.
- Cory went above and beyond to make the moment about himself in a manner that was entirely inappropriate.
Ultimately I think the refs would have asked for a 2nd look anyways (it seems like the far ref was considering it) and they may well have overturned it even if Cory and the other announcer were silent. But it’s easy to see how the refs might have been influenced by how it went down. I’m still not convinced it’s 100% clear the ball didn’t hit the kid’s knee.
Agree, basically, on your takeaway, but I also feel the need to say – and maybe I’m dead wrong … maybe – but I don’t think Cassell was in earshot, and I don’t think they came over because of something Cory said, or because of a question they posed. If they did, it doesn’t match up with what you see on the replay. Cassell isn’t in Cory’s vicinity, 20 or so feet, and numerous fans and broadcasters away, and the other guy was across by the teams/coaches, when they made the decision to take a look at the TV monitor. (plus - Cory is literally mic’ed up the whole time, y’know, broadcasting a game, so you can hear what he says)
The whole thing annoys me b/c Cory is not remembering the thing correctly… (and tbh, making it worse on himself – it’s the same root problem – main character syndrome. I’ll shut up, and like I said, I’m probably wrong)
What is, “Things Cory Alexander would never say”
I mean, the whole incident was designed in a lab to magnify Cory’s flaws. It’s like someone said to me, Haney, you need to focus on your job ALL DAY. I’d melt down…
I am most mad that we are missing a rare opportunity to categorize TB on the Francon system:
Francon 3, I think?
Oh, sorry. I stopped in here thinking this was a thread about tonight’s game. My bad. Carry on with all the Cory takes.
Man, I am really in the minority I guess. I don’t care anymore about the Cory thing at all. I don’t care what he does on social, and he’s said he talked about it with Tony and it’s fine. It just doesn’t seem like that a big deal anymore.
Also, at the end of the day, it is the ref’s fault. The refs made the call then asked an announcer his opinion (or allowed an announcer to call them over to change it - pick your version of events). That is not at all procedure and the fault lies with them. Yes, maybe Cory could have replied to a question with “I don’t know - that’s your call” but he replied as many people would in the spur of the moment by saying what he thought was the correct answer. He maybe should have done it differently, but it’s over.
Unless he does it again (seem super unlikely) this is all water under the bridge. The only thing that will make it live on and let him enjoy being a martyr is if UVA fans keeps harping on it.
Cory as an alumni of the program - one of the best of his era, NBA veteran who has gone to become a rotational broadcaster for ESPN brings much more value to our program than one incident like this could erase. It was a dumb situation all around, you learn from those things (hopefully) and move on
glad to have won and then not have that win flagged by a bunch of detractors as having been influenced in our favor by officiating
I will add an addendum to my post though, that if Cory talks about the whole incident a bunch during the game tonight, rather than just letting it go and moving on, then I will be annoyed. He would be wise to let that tweet be his last comment on the situation, or to say early in the broadcast all that’s behind us and let’s focus on tonight’s great game.
Lol- Not really hating but he’s the type of guy that NEEDS a lawyer in that they would incriminate themselves by simply existing.
I agree with all of this. And if this had been the gist of Cory’s public response (I even outlined this above), I wouldn’t be commenting on it anymore*, as I had intended not to. Instead he sent out a tweet that IMO fanned the flames, criticizing the UVA fan base as lacking integrity (“They think I should be partial to UVA”) while putting his own integrity on a pedestal. He could have entirely put this to bed with some version of “Hey, I’m doing my best, the refs made the call not me, sorry to be a distraction.”
*Technically I’m still not commenting on the incident. I’m commenting on the tweet ** bc I think it made things worse.
**Or whatever we call them now. X’s or something.
Of course he could Never admit he was wrong, or atleast out of bounds. This just shows me that his employer hasn’t said anything about this to him or they don’t recognize the GRAVITY of the situation.
If he was contrite or at least silent from this point on then yes…but we will see.
But Fresh they can’t rewind their *real time review, they can only look at video and continue to say the call was wrong.
The issue is that neither Cory or Pseudo Doug are referees to make that an"official" call.
Like I said “your eyes lie to you all the time”
I generally hate replay anyway. Unless a ref just had zero view
