✂ Cuts From The Corner: Maryland

Quick turnaround on this one so different approach - more stream of consciousness on the main points from the game and how relevant they seem moving forward.

Thought it was pretty funny in the post game that Grünloh told Hall to make sure he mentioned in the interview the several clear outs he made that led to Hall layups. Said they ought to be counted as assists. Obviously, Hall did mention it.

The number of Mallory’s steals was kind of a mystery. At one point my SCORE app was saying 7. Finished at 6 and then the official said 5. No matter what, a great stat. BTW, I was astonished that Chance came back into the game (was thinking at the time that maybe the layoff before New Year’s Eve would allow him back for that game) and then he played like nothing had happened.

I’m irrationally happy that this has been a big part of our team’s offensive approach this season, after years of rarely doing it under TB. In general, our team does more of the Dark Arts of basketball under Odom (Gortat screens, free throw grifting, etc).

Nice cuts, as always.

Agree that it wasn’t the prettiest game on Tv or in the box score but there was a lot to still be happy about. First half can be chalked up to rust / missed bunnies.

Very eager to see us play some ACC games. Our noncon hasn’t been the most exciting. Texas was nice. Beating Buzz is always fun.

Agree on the exciting part but actually think TX UMD Dayton Butler and NW will be very good prep for the middle of the league. Upcoming games of VT State Cal and Stanford should mirror those. Unfortunately none of those have helped in prep for Duke UNC or Louisville.

Haven’t gotten a chance to read this yet so it might have been mentioned but I loved how a couple times during the game Grünloh sealed his man to give Dallin a wide open lane and easy layup. It’s a moving screen that the refs cant call so we should take advantage of it when we can.

I am encouraged that we’re showing some ability to have multiple ball screen coverages. Odom talked after the game about how they wanted to have the screener’s defender out higher to take away Coit’s pull-up 3 game, and that he thought the centers did a good job of it but when Maryland went to having non-centers do the screening, we had more trouble with it.
