✂ Cuts From The Corner - Memphis (2024)

Cuts after dark.

Apart from line ups, two other things coaches could’ve done to address the press:

-play the best possible defensive line up. They only set the press on their made shots, of which there were many during that stretch.

-run a new kind of press break. Really anything new. They ran by and large the same thing, other than a tiny wrinkle at one point. It just wasn’t working. You also need a secondary play after breaking half court to avoid the trap. Had nothing there either.

We better work on full court press break. Easy formula to beating us if other teams pay attention

Yeah, both are true. But with the press break it was really that so many times we looked lost/weren’t taking ownership of helping.

When they boxed up with three guys showing for a pass against the trap they didn’t turn it over much - but when they all floated away, almost trying to clear out, against the trap - it was a disaster.

All of Saunders, Cofie, and Power can help break the press to receive the pass, take a couple of dribbles, and make another pass. We’d just repeatedly abandon our guy against the trap as a team, IMO. I’m down with some additional looks against it - but I’m mostly keyed into just; the mentality has to be to beat it with the pass not just the dribble and four guys have to help every time.

The initial pass to a player (Rohde) in the corner gives them 4 defenders with 2 players. Really have to avoid that (i think Isaac made that first intial pass)

Exactly what you said. Need guys coming back to the ball and showing big targets

While I am thinking about this I also like using a big to inbound it initially. Saunders seems good with the ball. He should inbound and be the release pass back guy to swing it back out of the first trap. We had Ted Jeffries there who was amazing doing that

Yeah I like that

Cuts joining LRA was a (pre-)Christmas miracle

Have always wondered why we seem so willing to give it to our guy in the corner when facing the press.

The Corner is so inviting hahaha. Like has gravity

Finally caught up on my back issues of Cuts. Good stuff. We need to play more of A-Rob. He is getting better with more PT. I didn’t see this one except for these clips, and he handled Dainja well.

Remember when X burnt the red shirt and then never

Maybe Bliss is the smart one

Yeah, my thought was Minor last year. He was the only guy on our team who could credibly defend a true big, but for some reason we didn’t cultivate it until mid-season.

A-Rob is the same. He is the only one who can credibly defend a true big (Cofie is still a bit green, I think). Now, to be fair, there are not that many around the league, but one has already beaten us. Yiğitoğlu. (Will leave it to @jazznutUVA to add the proper accent marks).

ARob is a wild one. Hard to watch how he plays bigs/impacts the interior and feel good that our internal determination is, apparently, “only if there’s foul trouble.”

Like, I get that they want to play Cofie and Saunders and are still invested in Blake - but then find other ways to accommodate all of those guys.

I think Ron has decided Cofie-Blake isn’t a pairing that works (largely supported by the lineup data), so that means Cofie minutes are all coming at the 5. For me, it would be good to divide those center minutes 20-10-10 between the three options (or something in that ballpark).

How about @jazznutUVA ? The hardest working man in LRA business.
