A little pre-game reading… about our last game… if you’re so inclined.
I think Rohde may have been the first player in a while who has actually thrown the back-screen pass in Sides multiple times in a season. Need a little…cojones to go for it.
Rohde is Mike Gallego and Randy Velarde and Ben Vander Plas and Jeff Nelson all rolled into one. Connectors. Utility infileders. Middle relievers. Those guys will win you World Series and nattys when you have sluggers and aces and all Americans around them.
But if not…
The question with Rohde is if he can be a slugger or ace**. We shall see… but until he does… you don’t make Mike Gallego and Randy Velarde the centerpiece of your team. Or do you? Because you can build around them …
** After all, Mariano was Wetteland’s set-up man
Shorter Haney - many/most hoops fans undervalue connectors. But do smart Wahoo fans over-value them?
Glad you made that point about Minor’s screening. It was noticeable in that game and something that can work against all competition.
Ben Zobrist was a utility guy. WS MVP, 3x All Star.
Was Joe Harris a utility guy? Not someone who really created for himself or others at the rate Rohde does but did hit open and some curl drives in mover blocker.
Such an underrated ability in our motion offenses. Run him into a brick wall once or twice, and I have to imagine your defender will lose a split second flinching
Loving the baseball references! Brings back memories of rotisserie baseball…not the H2H type, but the entire season. Awesome set up men who could get strikeouts were so crucial…like Jeff Nelson…
Perhaps. I think he’s a little more than a connector though, he’s one of two players on the roster who has shown the ability to get the offense one pass ahead of the defense with the ball. Pretty much everyone else on the roster is a finisher (in terms of needing someone to create a shot for them), except for maybe Eli.
That first Minor clip captured this announcer flub (I hope!) that made me laugh in real-time:
Re Minor, “Bennett said he’s a better player than he is a student-athlete”
Yeah, that was weird
