✂ Cuts From The Corner - @SMU

Cuts From The Corner SMU Review: Playing without Ames was a tall task, but I was less pleased with how we managed it than some of our other games. Don’t think we managed to what happened in-game very well at all.

Have to have counters when they adjust

Yup - and have to just philosophically approach each game like “let’s see what’s working and go with that” rather than turning to predetermined depth charts.

This is the magic for me. Feel like coaches get this wrong all the time

I’m no NBA scout, but boy, Cofie can do some impressive things…

And, man, that play where we had the ball down 5 with like 1:20 to go and iMac is trying to draw a foul? Oy vey… that’s the crescendo of a bad strategy (putting too much on iMac to create) combined with a really not good “feel” play from a player (that’s when you wanna try to draw a foul, rather than make a play?) combined with a lack of Ron giving refs the business.

I’m starting to think he might. I wonder if he needs like one thing in his game to pop… but he’s big, athletic, can shoot, and seems to have a good head for the game

Another reason you hire Ron for 3 years starting now. Ups our chances to retain The Cofie

Fire Ron and give Cofie the Dybantsa package

Heck, we could probably keep him around for the rookie minimum

As was said after the game on Saturday, Cofie was the best player on the floor, for either team, and it wasn’t particularly close.

He is disruptive on D, he is starting to know how to hedge and recover quickly. He can easily guard 3-5. His jumper is smooth. His FT shooting is very good. His handle is above average, particularly for a big guy. He is as strong as an ox and was manhandling that 7’2" turk from SMU.

He also plays with a smile on his face.

Believe we could give him the ball on the elbow more (like we did with Dre) and just let him work to the hoop. Get fouled or go up with it strong.

He is the truth. It is easy to see him in the NBA, just as it was easy to see RD in the NBA during his first year. Cofie is 1 and done, or 2 and done (at most).

Best news is that he appears to love it at UVa.

Hope Ron keeps giving him more responsibility on both ends. If Cofie keeps his head about him then the sky’s the limit.

Go HOOS.

Been saying it

I believe in his first coaches corner show, it was mentioned that Cofie said Ron gives him more confidence than any other coach he’s played for

The Cofie conversation is a good one for the broader Program Discussion.

Cofie likely stays if Ron is the HC. He likely leaves if he is not. If I were Ron, Cofie would be getting 30 minutes a game just bc of that
