Only thing I know for certain is Tillis is gonna be a problem for years to come in mens leagues after he is done hoopin for real
Devin Tillis will make a great change-of-pace sub for Thijs de Ridder, but he’s too small and unathletic to match up against ACC forwards.
Oh damn, I just watched that end of OT play against Chattanooga. F*** man, I know it’s just the NIT, but to lose like that, really hurts. I had no idea.
Great pass by Tillis. Leuchten bobbles, but gets the ball where it should go, and the frosh just misses the bunny. Brutal.
I’ve read up to the (attempted) debunking so far.
Really good stuff. Appreciate you doing these as always.
Basically, he excels at shooting and general hoops savviness stuff (like using his body, passing). He can get sped up and/or overwhelmed when he has to face length and speed and athleticism.
Thanks! Pretty accurate through the offensive lens. I hope you will remove your parenthetical after reading that section
Look, I really appreciate the argument and all the work that went into it. You convinced me that Leuchten and Evans are the ones who deserve most of the praise for keeping UAB’s pretty good offense below their averages (only 69 points in regulation). And you also convinced me that Tillis really struggles guarding faster, bigger athletes, esp. in transition.
But — and you acknowledge this — Tillis also kinda did well enough when he was on an island, at least some of the time, and did a nice job funneling guys to the help.
It’s sort of a coherent picture with his offense: he’s smart and savvy and uses that to bridge some of the gap from his lack of athleticism and size.
It may just be where you start: before I watched a handful of Lendeborg possessions, my prior was that I assumed Tillis would be turrible on defense, esp. against a guy like Yax. I think you came to it having heard a bit of the rep that Tillis was good on defense as proven by his defense on Yax.
Idk I thought I was being heavy handed showing the clips I did but there were more that weren’t as glaring. I distinctly felt like he was the worst defender that regularly played for Irvine after most games.
Those positive possessions were some of his better possessions and one drew a hand check and the other he got completely lost and then recovered.
I guess my main premise is this - I don’t really want us to be a team that has to settle for playing someone with a glaring defensive weakness anymore while we try to mask it through other guys and our system.
We have the resources to have players who contribute offensively and are plus defenders… which is why I’m so high on De Ridder. Tillis as a role player is a much different proposition and I’m down for that.
Totally agree with the last bit. If TDR signs (I say out of superstition) and fits our expectations, then Tillis will be much more popular. Will then just be up to Odom to find the right spots for him.
