⛹ Dai Dai Ames - Official Thread

I think I’ve determined the starting lineup will be:

Ames
Mckneely
Warley
Saunders
Buchanan

With TJ Power playing starter like minutes as the 6th man, Bliss and Murray both as consistent rotation guys, and Rohde and Robinson being fringe rotation guys (largely matchup dependent).

This isn’t what I’d do, but these are just the vibes.

you obviously haven’t seen Dai Dai play. He is the starter at DAY 1…

Not sure how that can be firmly stated. Warley is a proven ACC pg (even with shooting woes). Bliss was a first team peach jam, redshirted and has familiarity, and from all accounts Tony really likes him a lot.

Dai Dai could start and he came on really strong at the end of the season for kstate but nothing shows he would be the guaranteed starter on our entirely new team.

Also, while it’s true he performed better at the end of the year, it’s not like he was killing it night in night out. He had like three good games. Which is great - and the college hoops season isn’t crazy long so it’s a meaningful chunk - but he wasnt like suddenly tearing up the BIG12 for a ten or twelve game stretch or something.

Too much we don’t know about Ames’s and Bliss’s outside shooting and playmaking in the context of whatever we are running. Looking forward to seeing how that shakes out but I don’t feel solid enough to say much about who should be paired with who in the backcourt just yet.

I disagree somewhat about Warley in that, from what I’ve seen of him, he is not proven that he can run the point offensively in a system like ours. Florida State does not usually run an offense that is initiated by their PG . The ball handlers might bring the ball up to half court, but then, everybody becomes interchangeable parts, similar to how their defense works. Warley does have the ability to defend a PG, but I’m not so sure we’ll see him play much PG for us. I’m in “we’ll see” mode when it comes to how we’ll use Warley.

I think this is the main crux. like @zh00s said, what is the system? We dont know.

Yeah, since Warley started the transfer commitment run a couple of months back, seems like a lot of folks are saying certain new players don’t fit what we “do”.

If everyone agrees changes are needed, isn’t that a good thing?

I agree.

I love our personnel if we’re revamping the offense to be like UConn’s.

If we just run our base stuff, I don’t love the personnel.

I think a lot of people don’t believe the changes on the offensive end will be that significant. There will almost certainly be tweaks, but Tony has almost always run some variation of the same general types of offense. He has a philosophy he’s largely stuck to. So yes, it’s TBD, but like I doubt we’re becoming a transition oriented team or prioritizing post scoring, etc. I hope we see some rather significant changes, but who knows.

I’d also personally be generally ok if we want to keep running a lot of our stuff if we actually were picking up personnel who fit it well. But trying to run our offense with multiple guards who aren’t good jump shooters has been like having teeth pulled.

I’d like to see us start: Dai Dai, IMac, Taine, Saunders, Buchanan

Then have Warley, Bliss as the guards off the bench and Power/Robinson as the bigs off the bench

Feels like Taine, IMac, Saunders provides a lot of shooting givin Dai Dai some driving lanes

I’m firmly on the “it is 2024 and a good offense needs three outside shooters” bandwagon.

Some chatter that we don’t know what our system will be but I’m curious as to what offensive system anyone thinks might be well-suited for Ames and Warley together.

We talking some sweet Eric Snow action?

Agree. If any differences, I think that we can extend what we have been running to add some more complex, double and triple picks with options off those picks like UConn runs. UConn’s offense could still allow us to get back on D and not sacrifice the packline for offense. We’re not going to run UNC’s or similar run-and-gun stuff because it won’t fit with the packline. I think TB is going to need to spend more practice time on offense if he truly wants to change things. ( Not that my basketball knowledge is even in the same universe as his.)

I assume it may just be me but the Cuts page keeps crashing every time I try to load it.

Tracking a Transfer pieces are murder on phones because it’s so much linked video instead of my own I can upload.

So sorry about that

Laptops don’t have an issue
