Fall Recruiting Action

Would rather know now than them pulling this past minute

I just want us to go all in on Xavier Booker. Yeah he has motor issues but he also has a high ceiling and needs a little development/probably won’t be demanding 40 minutes a game right away anyways.

That’s a very impressive group. Sheppard is still my favorite but there was some others I wouldn’t mind picking up. How many guards would we sign?

I think they are recruiting as if one is open but keeping tabs as if there will be two openings maybe according to HGN.

Im all about Jaylen Curry and London Johnson (if sheppard is Kentucky bound). LP/Brogdon – kihei/Ty — Reece/Armaan vibes. Also would solidify our North Carolina recruiting pipeline that is now a thing.

Jeff Sheppard was recently interviewed by Rex Chapman (and Josh Hopkins) on YouTube. Sheppard was very complimentary of the coaches recruiting his son. He had nice things to say about both Cal and Chris Mack, however it seemed to me that he was more impressed by Coach Bennett and Chris Holtmann of Ohio State. Rex Chapman certainly expressed his admiration for Bennett, but claimed that Virginia’s academics were too tough for him. It’s an interesting interview, and not that much of it concerns the recruitment of Reed Sheppard, but it does suggest that it is fairly open. As far as the recruitment part went, the interview didn’t have as much of a bias as you might have expected. I’ve attached the link

I really like Cupps. He is already there as a PG and will now just get better physically. would like to see more of his passing skills which I havent in these clips. Reminds me some of a guy Chad Copeland from Cleveland TN who played a year at Fla State before transferring back to Tenn Chattanooga and having a great career there

Bond finished with 26 in a loss. Bond only 6’3 without the hair lol Hopefully Evan posts the game clips later (he usually does).

Thank you sir for posting this. Listened to the entire thing and personally related to so much of it.

Also wanted to thank you @73CAV for your posts which you always spend considerable consideration and thoughtfulness to sharing. You always are careful to IIRC et alia where guys like me just blurt nonesense.

I have no clue but have always taken it that you are a proud UVa grad from 1973 and folks on forums would be well served to read what you send … even when you are full shit (kidding, couldnt help that)

Wahoowa sir!

Thanks for the kind thoughts. Yep, Class of '73. And, yes, generally full of shit. One of the perks of being an old fart is that there are allowances for such. Most of the time. (I have no excuses for my younger shit-filled days!) Slainte!

Do we want to go after some of these 5 stars at PG? From my outside perspective getting caught in that PG turnover cycle after Joel Berry is the number one factor that led to Roy’s earlier than intended retirement. Don’t know that we want to get out in a similar situation.

None of them are one and dones.

In your mind or theirs… as we have seen… these 5* don’t all agree they aren’t lottery picks… and thus recruitment turns into a circus…

London johnson probably doesn’t see himself as a one and done and neither does Curry. At least they haven’t shown any signs in interviews (you can tell either from the language they use or sometimes they just bluntly state it). I doubt we would be heavily interested in a one and done point guard. Even duke fans think Caleb Foster is around for two years. Johnson just recently got that end of the top 25 rankings.

The one and done’s tony seems interested in are the forwards.

Just curious but does anyone have tabulation of who the lead assistant was on our last few years of commits?

Kinda curious as to success rate between Getter, Vandross and Williford (even if it’s impossible to correlate success / failure to the asst.)

I think it’s a self correcting problem. There is absolutely no reason for the staff not to gauge their interest in Virginia. That said, if they imagine that they will play for just one (or, maybe, two) seasons of college ball, I doubt that they’ll be interested in Virginia. More likely, they will want to play in a system that allows them some freedom to show their offensive creativity. Also, they probably won’t be that interested in UVa’s focus on defense. I suspect the staff will figure this out pretty quickly. Of course, now that Virginia has a national title, there is a certain cache associated with an offer from Coach Bennett. That said, I believe most of the prospects with those offers understand how UVa plays, and what will be required of them. Virginia may end up with some OADs, but it will be because they greatly exceeded expectations their first year, and not because they met them.

Thing is it doesn’t matter how they see themselves now. Coby White wasn’t widely seen as a OAD entering UNC and he’s the one who started the cycle there.

Like y’all said it’ll probably work itself out. Just a thought I had seeing the breakdown HGN posted. Hopefully we land Reed Sheppard and the rest become irrelevant.

Then, again, Coby White said he picked UNC over Virginia because he didn’t want to play in Virginia’s schemes. He liked everything about UVa but the style of play. And, if he had come to Virginia, I kinda doubt that he would have been a OAD.

It’s not always cut and dry. Like say Williford might initiate things and be more involved but if he’s in Vandross’s area that’s who ends up going to see him. And sometimes it’s almost all the head coach, especially the ones that come later.

As I remember things…

McKneely-Getter
Traudt-Getter
Bond-Getter I think, but mostly TB
Dunn-Vandross
Milicic-Carpenter
Murray-Carpenter
Beekman-Vandross
McCorkle-Williford
Abdur Rahim-Vandross but mostly TB
Morsell-Williford
Shedrick-Vandross
McKoy-Williford
Kihei-all Bennett
Stattmann-Sanchez

The lack of Soderberg and immediate impact of Getter really jumps out. Looks like a great reallocation of roles. Will Soderberg still be allowed on the bench for games?
