Just one? After more than 1/2 century of watching UVa basketball, I have a few. First, there are the obvious choices: Parkhill, Gerard, Walker, Lamp, Sampson, Stith, Morgan, Deane, Staples, Williams, Hall, Reynolds, Singletary, Harris, Brogdon, Perrantes, et al. However, my very favorite players haven’t always received the as much press, although they didn’t lack for it either. Chip Case, Jim Hobgood, Al Drummond, Steve Castellan, Mike Owens, Kenny Turner, Matt Blundin, & Travis Watson all earned my admiration. Especially Case and Turner who contributed at a very high level on knees that should have kept them sidelined. However, I imagine my all time favorite player is Bobby Stokes. Aside from his performance as a frosh in the '76 ACC tournament (and, especially, his play in the closing minutes of the Maryland game), in many ways he epitomized what I believe most of us want to see in a Virginia student-athlete. It’s worth noting that at his last home game, in an era when Senior Night wasn’t a formal thing with a spectacle orchestrated by the Athletic Department, Stokes and Castellan received the longest standing ovation from the fans I believe I have ever witnessed. In fact, they had to be brought back to the floor from the locker room because the fans wouldn’t stop. To my way of thinking, the fact that the whole thing was spontaneous made it even more special, and it sort of summed up the way many of us felt about him.

That said, I never got to watch Buzzy.

My bro and I met him at the Duke game. Super nice. As a kid playing in the driveway I was always Watson, while my bro was Cory. One thing I remember on my one visit to UHall as a kid was hearing Watson rebound a ball and slam that thing into his big mitts. Was so loud lol.

I feel like someone should mention Roger Mason Jr.

I remember rushing the court with him standing on the scorers table vs UNC.

He’s a great guy. Was a cple years ahead of me and I played a lot of pick up agaisnt him. Ran into him at the ND and we got to talk for a bit. I have a lot of love for him. If he was on a better overall team he could have been dangerous.

He was the Wonder during the ‘75-76 season, culminating with the run through the ACC tournament. Hooping at MemGym, wore the socks knee high, the Adidas shell toe (he wore highs, I wore lows), the wrists with sweat bands. But could never in a million years come close to his touch off the glass. An artist.
