I’ve got to go with Gill. He brought so much joy to those teams and was so fun to watch. Plus great hair.
And related to that, also have big soft spots in my heart for Mamadi and Akil. Mamadi both for his goofiness and his sheer raw talent that it was fun to watch him try to harness in real time. Akil because he was the definition of a grinder and came from nowhere to be the back bone of those early great Tony teams. He just did all the small stuff you needed.
Also think Perrantes is a great great pick up above. What a baller.
Interesting to me: 8 Ty’s, and only 1 Dre and 1 Kyle (by my unofficial and perhaps wrong, count)
Love Ty obv, but Dre’s breakout in the middle of his RS frosh year was my “we could win the whole friggin thing with this guy” moment. We were really good in that Brogs/Justin era but I never / rarely felt that. More like a final 4 type ceiling. The closest in that era was actually in 2015 right before Justin got hurt.
Bonus reminiscence: also, I’ve memory holed the winter break drama with his bro posting something like “Can’t wait for you to come back home”, after the redshirt and slow start. Then pretty much in early January he went on a rocket ship.
What he allowed our offense to achieve is one of the greatest things to ever happen to UVa basketball, and the heat checks and passing were so damn fun.
I will add, before I move onto the revenue generating portion of my day, I appreciate what Ty gave us more since we haven’t had it since he’s been gone.
At the time, we were fresh off Brogs, so it seemed less unique. (Plus Brogs had the defensive chops).
I’ve had this conversation with my girlfriend (Kentucky fan who views our games as torture), and she thinks its insane I would have any favorite other than Brogdon.
I think if you asked the greater UVa fan population that aren’t on message boards you would get more Brogdons/Guys/Ralphs. I bet a lot of people in my age range have a real love for Joe Harris as well, he had a pretty outsize level of appreciation when I was in school. This is a forum uniquely suited to understanding Ty’s contributions to the program.
Brogdon from an objective standpoint is more significant to the program, but I always thought Ty was what really took the title team over the top.
