Did they switch jerseys at half time?
Way too hard to pick just one, but I loved Mamadi Diakite. Super competitive, fun to watch (especially shot blocking), but also always full of joy and good energy, and his post game interviews were often hilarious.
Watching his growth over the years was a lot of fun.
Turned this on about 2/3 way through and first thing the announcer said was â2 points in the last 5 minutes for UVA.â Just one of those UVA traditions
This is awesome, and really difficult!
I was a student from 1994-1998, so Harold Deane, CA, Junior Burrough, Staples, even Williford! All brought great memories! I liked some of these dudes before attending UVA. My brother went to Illinois during the 1989-1993 years with the Flyinâ Illini and I was totally into those dudes, but some time in 1992 I started paying attention to UVA and then decided to go there (against the wishes of brother and family) and really got into the team. Those guys were fun to watch.
I went to the final 4 in 2019 and the championship and I really have a hard time picking from those guys! Ty, Kyle, Dre, Jay, Kihei, Mamadi, etc. Unbelievable group of players and personalities. I have to say that Ty and Mamadi stand out for their pure joy in basketball. But, its like choosing between your kids.
This is like picking your favorite child. Iâm trying to decide between Ty, Dre, Brogs, Staples and Junior. Itâs a coin flipâŚ.
Started later than many here, but my list of personal faves by era goes Williams > Reynolds > Harris > Gill > Ty.
Forced to pick only one, Iâd go with Gill but Tyâs right there with him.
Let me be the third to say Joe(y Hoops) Harris, the player that I identify as the start of the winning CTB-era.
Other award winners
Leitao era: $$
Gillen era: Roger Mason Jr
Honorable mentions for silly reasons: LARS, Tunji, Billett
Iâm glad you mentioned him, he was also on my list. I would have to go with Barry Parkhill as he was the Hoo that had me fall in love with Virginia hoops when I was in the 5th grade (and ultimately had UVa become my college choice)
One that hasnât been mentioned that I truly loved was Terry Gates (the enforcer).
We wore that like a badge of honor in the Easters years!
Also dudes that I played sort of like that I loved to watchâŚ
Lamp, Morgan, Staples, Billet, Guy, Woldetensae!!!
Why youâre helping I donât know, why you go for the pump fake I donât know - and the shot by To as to win it!!!
I was 20 rows up from that corner right above the Hoo bench.
I mean someone (other than TB) has to say Kihei. It was a frustrating ride at times but that was more down to the way TB used Kihei and personnel around him.
For me, it was his contributions to the national championship run as a first year and his heroics against Louisville, Tech, and UNC his second year. Looking off Ty and Kyle to make a perfect pass to Mamadiâs shooting pocket in the Purdue game was an unbelievable decision given the time and situation. He also outplayed Payton Pritchard against Oregon during that run.
I have a buddy who canât tell you his favorite UVa player, but instead his least favorite players â in no particular order, Hand, Bub, and Clark.
@Cuts_from_The_Corner and I were talking about him in another thread last week and you summed it up well. I got of lot of love for the kid. And he pissed me off a ton.
Iâm most fascinated by the scenario/conversations/arguments he managed to inspire. Iâve never seen anything like it before.
Loved 22
Got to know him well after his pro career
He had a funny release. He put the ball in his palm and shot with so much back spin
I mentioned that too him one time and he was surprised anyone noticed.
I said game recognized game lol
Glad you mentioned Kihei. He may not be making it as #1 on anyoneâs list but I bet heâd make a lot of Top 10s. (Itâs just, even in that era⌠how you gonna pick him above Ty??)
For my quirky, not-yet-mentioned, personal-favorite pick⌠Kenton Edelin.
EDELIN STOLE THE BALLLLLLL
And then came the hard part, dribbling it down the court
IIRC, the Playboy list in question wasnât âpartyâ schools, but was âdrinkingâ schools. Back in the 60s, they published both lists each year. At least, that is the way I remember it.
