February 2023 - UVA Basketball

Kihei has 1 Naty, and 3 final fours from his days dropping dimes to Ralph.

You touch on something that I’m not sure registers with most, but part of me wants to see this group win something ie. ACCT so they can all have some hardware because realistically they aren’t going to a FF or raising a Naty banner, but I want the guys who grinded through last season esp. get something to reward them for keeping the program afloat during some tough times.

Cutting some nets would be nice. And Greensboro is most likely

Exactly.

There’s something to be said for wanting Kihei to get to experience an ACCT Championship, the one thing missing from his resume at this point (National Champion, 2x ACC Regular Season Champion, all-ACC Team, etc).

Interesting stat, Kody Stattmann was the first 4-year player for Tony Bennett to not win an ACCT since Jontel. Would like to win one this year to reestablish that rhythm. Then I won’t thirst for one again until 2027.

Without Googling… anyone know where the tradition of net cutting came from and why it started?

Love that we are all on the same page now after @haney tried to derail us earlier… kidding my man

That seems right. I’d be curious how many national champions reached their conference tournament championship game (even if they lost it). It seems most who think losing in the ACC tournament is beneficial are looking at it from a physical standpoint (3 games in 3 days is tough). A championship game loss is the same as a win in that respect. I guess it would be different if you think a loss helps from the mental/emotional standpoint (refocus & motivate the team, and less pressure).

And I’m confident everyone will be freaking out if Clemson is torching us in the ACC semifinals.

Probably a Naismith purist clearing the way to reattach a peach basket to the rim.

Hmmmm. This is a good one. No clue. If I had to guess it was coach Case at NC State where the ACC tourney originated

I feel like I’ve heard the story about cutting the nets down. It goes back away and started with sometime random and just caught on. (helpful I know)

Close. It does come from the peach basket days, when the winning team would get to keep the peach basket plus a full load of peaches. Don’t bother to look this up. Just trust me and feel free to share this factoid at cocktail parties and on Reddit.

If another 1-2 games in the ACCT help Dunn along his in-game development path … I am all for it.

The problem they ran into is that peaches aren’t in season year round, so sometimes the winners would have to make do with some other fruit. In the winter months some teams even settled for root vegetables since that was often all that was available.

Too bad the root vegetable jam never caught on.

Interesting take on UNC. A lot of people keep talking about UNC talent… I don’t really see it. I think UVA has more talent and more NBA players on it current roster.

Just because they were higher ranked… rankings are based on potential, doesn’t mean that they pan out. I don’t see 1 NBA player on UNC roster.

You clearly haven’t tasted Rutabaga Jelly!

That’s due to player development. Talent that enters the program versus how that talent is developed.

I believe that it was an NC State coach who started it at the ACCT–at least according to the ACC Network “History of the ACC Tournament.” Think it was Case, but it might have been Sloan.

I don’t always buy that. Bacot was never going to develop into an NBA talent. I think they’ve gotten max development out of Bacot.

Caleb Live just isn’t very good, I think he’s maxed out too and would need to develop PG skills to play in NBA because he’s not that big.

RJ Davis I think has developed into a fine PG, but lacks size for NBA.

I think people overvalue UNCs roster. Duke has way more talent and has underperformed way more than UNC, IMO.
