Just eyeballing the most recent decade or so of champions, about half played in all of their conference tourney games (losing in the final should be effectively the same), and about half didn’t. I don’t think it’s really a factor either way.
I’m still annoyed we didn’t beat FSU and get another shot at Duke in 2019. You’ll all be shocked to hear I had some issues with the lineups in that game…
Looking at the box score of that game is super interesting. My memory of it was FSU just exploiting kihei for the whole game and shooting right over him over and over. But looking at the ± stats, Kihei’s was the best of the starters
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a recruiting class with three young men as mature + as comfortable with the media as high school seniors as Dunn, Bond, and Traudt were. And that’s not a shot at McKneely, he just shows a little more of the nerves you’d expect from an 18-19 year old. Still seems like a great kid. Special group of people that will hopefully be a special group of players.
One of my favorite CBB internet things is when people see this stat (or similar stats for overall power conferences) and start cheering for their team to lose in the conference tournament semis. Seems like people need reminders on the differences between dependent and independent events
To the extent there’s a tradeoff, we got the right trade, but I’m not convinced there’s a tradeoff. Maybe if we beat FSU, we’d have been sharper in the G-W 1H…
I’m with Fresh. I was at the 2018 ACC Tournament final, and it was wonderful. But I was ambivalent at best about the 2019 ACC Tournament. I thought losing would take some the pressure off the team.
This is where I am. I can’t see 1 extra game 6 days earlier being a huge difference maker. The reason the 18 tournament sucked is because Dre got hurt. But he was hurt in the semis. After Dre got hurt, the rest was details. But what details…
But I do understand the feeling that we had higher goals in 2019. I just happen to think that winning the ACCT would’ve been consistent with those goals.
And it was. FSU just beat us. Ty was at like 60 percent and had won the year before. I believe the psyche (?) of that team was redemption in the NCAA tourney.
The mental is to the physical as 4 is to 1 as Bobby Knight said
As far as does winning the ACCT help or hurt a run in March? It’s totally based on an individual teams situation. As everyone noted the '19 team didn’t need the 19 ACCT the mission was always the NCAA. For this year… I’m honestly not sure, I think winning the ACCT could be helpful for overall psyche. But taking injuries off the table, I don’t think there’s a huge plus or minus. An ACCT win could be a mental boost and provide some confidence but again that’s dependent on a lot of other factors
I recall a few years ago someone looked at the NCAA champions going back something like a decade and found that most of them did not win their conference tournaments.
I’m leaning more in that direction, the more wins this team can get the better it will be. A lot of the players are streaky and finding a rhythm will do them well.
But I’ll always lean on the side of being healthy.
Agree. Guys on the 2019 team had regular season and ACCt hardware already. They were after a final 4 (and more apparently). The guys on this team are fairly light on hardware (20-21 regular season under odd circumstances). Yes, I know Kihei won a natty. That was like 15 years or so ago though (feels like it, as I age in dog years…)
