Inshallah brother
and a PG
Iām OK with Dex learning how to be a lead DC and running a defense and calling plays on VTs dime. Better he work through mistakes and growing pains there than here. Assuming Pry isnāt going to run the defense himself.
Not gonna be Dex imo. Their insider posted the other day that they want someone with DC experience
Dex has DC experience at UConn
Agreed VT taking a shot on Dex is not a shot at UVa that sort of thing happens all the time.
So true. We really need one more body, especially at tackle. Iād love to see Steen move inside where I think heās better suited. Iām high on Metcalf for depth and think we have younger guys who can step up and rotate in. Just really need one more body.
Reed has a billion other visits lined up it appears so that may be one we have to sweat out. Guess we still have a shot at Wyatt but hard to feel great with him visiting Indiana. Other than that itās⦠scary
I donāt think it is a shot at us per se, but I think a lot of people are not going to like it. I imagine a lot of more casual fans are going to get pretty riled up about it. This kind of stuff doesnāt happen that often with alums the caliber of Dex.
I am personally far more upset that Elliott let Hagans and Mines out of the nest than I would be about Dex, but I think it is tough optics for a program that canāt afford many dings to how theyāre perceived.
Mines had no role here with Hagans already the WR coach. If you hire him for TEs, then the OC has to cover one of QB, RB or OL. Des has TEs now, he couldāve taken RBs instead. Displaces Gaither who also runs STs (poorly), so would need someone on the defensive side for STs. Not Cox or Downing, so either Slade or Sintim. Or maybe Mines.
Then Hagans left the following season and given all that happened and his relationship with Davis and probably the substantial pay raise, I donāt fault him at all.
Guarantee you that Diaco ran the defense himself at UConn. Also, years later when they were together at Purdue, Diaco was the lead DC over Dex.
If Anthony Poindexter, arguably best post 50ās player in UVA history, becomes the DC at Virginia Tech I will never forgive UVA football
The extra kicker to it would be that Bud Foster is apparently rejoining the program as an analyst to help overlook the defense. So Dex would be taking the DC job and also be under the tutelage of Bud. Yuck.
So Dex gets to be a P4 coordinator but has to have a babysitter? Yuck
Theyāre gonna hire Dex, but have Bud Foster be his consultant, but his actual boss will be Jimmy Kibble. Vick will sign his checks and Ken Oxendine will do his performance reviews.
Beamer will sit next to him at every staff meeting and refuse to share his ice cream.
I am still rooting for Dex to find his way back to UVA at some point (along with Biscuit) but his time in Cville as a coach (particularly on the London staff) was not really a smashing success. I was at UVA at the time and had friends on the team who didnāt speak very highly of him as a coach. Granted, they were on STs so maybe he was just a terrible STs coach. Also, heās had a decade to grow and mature so maybe itās not relevant anymore, but some of the things they said about him had me a bit concerned when there was talk of us potentially hiring him as HC.
He was very good when coaching our RBās/Secondary, and the latter half has remained true for most of his coaching career. But yeah he shouldāve never been our ST coach, not sure why London didnāt hire someone else for that role.
Iād love for him to come home but only in the event that heās successful because Iād really rather not have his legacy or public opinion be tainted by a bad coaching stint. In any case, he is not allowed to go to Virginia Tech. That should go without saying. But as a man of INTEGRITY, I trust Dex will not go to VT
(I want anyone to be successful but this is UVA football in the year 2025 so Iād rather Dex maintain his rep within the fan base and steer clear)
There are 132 FBS teams Dex could be successful at that I would openly root for him. Just no VT or UNC (Maryland is iffy too but not on that level).
Updating the Transfer Needs list after the holidays and going into one last hot stretch before things largely get set upon the start of the spring semester, hereās where I see remaining Portal target needs:
QB: 0. No update. Pickups of SMUās Chandler Morris (projected starter) and Nebraskaās Daniel Kaelin (depth competition) give us 5 scholarship QBs (plus PWO Brosterhouse), the most weāve carried since 2016.
RB: 0-1. No update. NC Centralās JāMari Taylor gives us a fifth scholarship RB (plus PWO Griese), which is about the usual load we carry for our 1-back offense. Staff seems high on Xavier Brown and Noah Vaughn to step up. If we take another, itās a ātoo good to pass upā type. Maybe reevaluate in the post-Spring cycle; easier to plug-and-play RBs in the summer.
WR: 0-1. Updated. Purdueās Jahmal Edrine (6ā3", career 63 catches for 944 yards and 8 TDs) comes in to take over the X position vacated by Malachiās departure; two years remaining and last year was working back from a torn ACL. None of our returners have stood out aside from Trell Harris (looked great in 4 games, but injured the other 8). Sitting at 10 on 'ship with a good distribution across classes. Probably fine for now, but look to add at least one more, maybe come spring if no obvious options work out in coming weeks.
TE: 0. No update. With Sage Ennis returning, weāve got 7 on scholarship which is a ton, more than enough to even run a lot of 12 (2-TE) sets. Twitty should step up into the primary receiving weapon role, with incumbents Gay, Kirby, and Rogers battling for depth.
OL: 1-2. No update. Brady Wilson arrives as next yearās center and Metcalf and Sipe are back for 6th years to provide interior depth, but we still need a sure-thing Right Side option (Boley, Steen, and Josey ideally the other starters); itās easy to peg the need as a RG but the right RT could slide Steen inside to Guard). Weāre at 16 'ships which is low-ish but not by much. Staff will focus down the winter stretch on one last big pull, then maybe target depth guys after spring.
DL: 1. Updated Weāre up to 14 'ships claimed (plus promising PWO DE Koudelka) with the return of bonus senior Jahmeer Carter. Running a 4-2 front we want to be deeper on the line; staff has carried 16 and 17 the last two seasons. DT no longer an issue (numbers wise) with Fresno State transfer Jacob Holmes reinforcing Carter, Britton and Hammond. DE got a boost from Elon edge rusher Cazeem Moore, and Alabama SDE Hunter Osborne, but one more DE for depth is probably still a need.
LB: 0-1. Updated. The LB room is beat up, going into the spring with 7 scholarships used but a few of those guys already a scratch for spring ball. The big win was getting Kam back for another year, and added FCS standout Maddox Marcellus (Eastern KY), while we let McDonald and Bracey work back from injury and Danley grow into an LB2 role. Would love one more given the injury concerns, but unlikely this winter.
DB: 1-2. No update. Two good pickups thus far in safety Devin Neal (Louisville) and corner JaāSon Prevard (Morgan State) but still feel light at only 15 total on scholarship, five of whom are in a big freshman class. Could add another corner and safety this cycle, hard to tell which is the more pressing need, though could also see this get addressed in the Spring instead.
Summary
Overall my scholarship count is at 80 give or take a punter. Up to five spots left, maybe 2-3 starters, and the rest ideally for depth and long term development.
