It was 21 when the whole line were 4th and 5th years with 3 years experience starting. We were the best line in the ACC that year from many accounts.

That OL was a great pass blocking OL. I’m hopeful this OL will allow us to run the ball like we haven’t in a long time. We should be able to get 3 yards every time we hand the ball off. If we can’t, that’s a problem.

We will see what the RB1 competition looks like but I still think we haven’t seen the best of Xavier Brown. Lord knows we can’t expect him to stay healthy, but he should be incredibly productive when he does play.

I can’t keep up with all of it. Who is our projected starting QB next year? Who will be the top WRs?

The transfer from North Texas, Morris

Quarterback

Starter: Chandler Morris, 3rd Team All-Conference in the American last year at North Texas. Will be a COVID senior this year, so a one-year rental, as UVA will be his 4th school in six years (previous stops at Oklahoma and TCU). Last year’s stat line: 322/512 (63%), 3774 PaYds, 31 TD, 12 INT, 242 RuYds, 4 RuTD.

Depth:

  • Gavin Frakes (RS Jr) - saw no action last year as QB3, redshirted year prior at NM State. Stat line at NM State as a true freshman in 2022: 55/110, 736 PaYds, 4 TD, 7 INT, 143 RuYds, 2 RuTDs.
  • Grady Brosterhouse (RS Jr) - PWO - Grady Bunch jumbo specialist and otherwise clipboard holder
  • Daniel Kaelin (RS Fr) - Transfer from Nebraska, saw no action as a true freshman. Solid recruit in the 2024 class, high-3-star.
  • Two incoming 3-star recruits: Cole Greer and Bjorn Jurgensen, ideally enough depth both should be in the background for at least a year.

Wide Receiver
Likely rotation

  • Jahmal Edrine (RS Sr) - The Malachi ā€œreplacementā€ as a big WR(X) target, put up 23 Rec, 365 RecYds, and 2 RecTD in 9 healthy games at Purdue last year.
  • Andre Greene (Sr) - Former 4-star recruit and transfer last year from UNC, only posted a quiet 9 Rec for 74 RecYds (no TDs) in a full season, often starting
  • Trell Harris (RS Jr) - Fairly impressive 15 Rec, 221 RecYds, and 2 RecTD in his four healthy games last year, reason for optimism if he can be healthy for a full season
  • Suderian Harrison (Jr) - Slot guy, 11 Rec for 99 RecYds (No TDs) last year.
  • Kam Courtney (So) - Slot guy, will platoon with Harrison, 12 Rec for 114 RecYds (No TDs) last year. Both Courtney and Harrison will hopefully step up with Tyree gone from this role.

Depth / Competition

  • TyLyric Coleman (RS So) - 4 catches in 7 appearances as a RS Freshman last year.
  • Tristan Ward (RS Fr) - No appearances as a true freshman.
  • Dillon Newton-Short (Fr) - 3-star, early enrollee
  • Isaiah Robinson - 3-star
  • Josiah Abdullah - 3-star, early enrollee

I want to add another receiver but it just seems like there’s a tremendous opportunity for Dre Greene to show everyone just how talented he is. His numbers weren’t impressive but he started to look comfortable in the 2nd half of the year. There were plays where you could see why he was one of the top WR recruits in the country out of HS. We just need to find ways to make those plays happen more frequently.

At WR I’m okay seeing how the spring goes, where we’ll have 9 scholarship guys availabile plus PWO Eli Wood.

There’s no sugar-coating the fact we lost our top four pass catchers from last year in terms of # of receptions (Malachi, Tyree, Neville, and Pace). Reason for optimism with Twitty stepping into Neville’s role, and we’ve got a couple of backs who ideally can replace Pace’s production. But replacing Malachi is tough.

That said, Trell, Greene, and Edrine give us some options to work with on the outside while trying out younger guys for depth, and if we need to go get more wideouts in the post-Spring portal, it’s probably the easiest position to integrate late in the cycle.

We must have some deep pocket donors if we are getting All American long snappers to transfer in…

He looks like he asked for his entire revenue sharing payment to be made in CLs (complimentary).

Lollll just noticed the jersey number too.

Yep made me chuckle

To be fair Trell would have been #2 in catches if healthy (granted the best ability is availability).

It’s also safe to expect either one of Suderian or Kam to really emerge (if not both).

Finally, we should actually be able to run the ball with our OL. Hopefully that just opens things up generally. If that doesn’t happen, it may not matter who we have at WR.

Losing Malachi was a big blow. Will be hard to fill that gap. But, with improved OL and improved QB play it will elevate the other receivers.

I’m genuinely excited about our run game heading into the year. I honestly can’t remember the last time I felt that way. Feel like our OL is going to be a good run blocking unti (still have pass blocking concerns though certainly feel better about that after the Wyatt addition).

X, if he can stay healthy, is a top ACC running back imo. And I’m very high on J’Mari Taylor. Just hope Des doesn’t F it all up.

In the four seasons he’s coordinated offenses in the ACC (at NC State and at UVa), he’s never had a season averaging more than 23.5 points a game. So what could go wrong?

It’s crazy he still has a job

We’re the only place that’s given him more than a season as an OC, and he’s had to take a much worse job after each other stint. Nothing but high standards around here.

Do any of you guys know if we run a zone blocking scheme or a gap blocking scheme? I know Anae/2J used to run zone blocking and Kitchings ran zone blocking in his career, but I thought Elliott ran gap at Clemson.

Anyway, I was just asking cause the new en vogue thing in the NFL for developing run games out of the shotgun is gap blocking. If there’s any way to scheme an advantage for us on offense, we should take advantage.
