I just read VCU / Martelli Jr just got their second top 100 recruit of the offseason. First was a guy from Gonzaga in DC in the 2025 class - Nyk Lewis. This second guy was from Philly and in the 2026 class. Sammy Jackson.
Pretty impressive recruiting from Martelli Jr so far
I wonder if this is partially due to VCU not having football and having the ability, like some of the Big East schools, to make very good financial offers to prospects. Also, I seem to recall that they recently received a gift/donation designated for basketball NIL.
Yeah, there was some speculation about that. I remain a little skeptical about those schoolsâ ability to pay so much in rev share when theyâre not bringing in as much revenue (without football). It almost seems to rely on a steady stream of super high donations.
Yeah there was an article that quoted a Gonzaga admin who said that notion is silly and that they are still significantly worse off than the football schools. Football just brings in so much money.
Gonzaga just isnât that rich. Some of the Big East schools do have the donor money where this could (and probably will) be a significant advantage for them.
Also suspect any AD saying that is at least 50% putting a call out to donors.
From what I hear they overpaid for him and the other finalists (Indiana, Texas and St. Joeâs) werenât gonna spend that much from their cap on a high school kid. Saving it for transfers.
The non rev share money is a separate point though and Iâd still argue those schools arenât necessarily better off than football schools. The same article mentioned how Big East schools wonât come close to the $20.5M cap on rev share (they estimate around half). So while that number will be disproportionately allocated to basketball, at the end of the day, Iâm not even sure itâs going to be more than the football schools that give any sort of a damn about basketball.
A little bit of âitâs different but itâs also the sameâ with respect to how recruiting worked before NIL/rev share. Good mid-majors can compete for a certain level of recruit by offering things power conference teams arenât willing to; before it was PT/role, now itâs PT/role + $.
If most schools with football are splitting 70%, 15%, 5%, 5% (football/mbb/wbb/the rest)⌠that means those schools would be spending about 15 mil of rev share on football and about 3 mil on mbb. If a big east school had half the rev share available 10 mil) but didnât have to share with football they could easily spend more than 3 mil on mbb⌠even if the their slice was just 5 mil available for rev share they could give 3 mil+ to mbb and be ahead on rev share in that sport.
I think another factor could be that the private schools of the Big East can use some fuzzy accounting as to the value of a scholarship and how much tuition their athletic department has to pay the university per student athlete that would decrease the athletic department expenses so that it could devote more of the budget to revenue sharing.
