General UVA basketball Thread November

I underestimated BVp, and hope that typo is in your phone for no particular reason.

I way underestimated Armaan.

However, I see a lot of takes that want to tell me that last night proves that Kihei and Reece together is good actually, and to those people I say, I could see those two win 10 NBA titles in a row together and I would still maintain those two are bad together. I’m a Kihei and Reece are bad together dead ender, and there are no set of facts that will convince me otherwise. Sorry, facts.**

** I’m being funny, but no, I don’t all of a sudden think they’re good together. They’re individually doing some nice things, but I don’t think it’s a good combo.

The 5-second call on the inbound play notwithstanding, one time when I am generally happy to see Kihei and Reece together on the court is when opponents start pressing while trailing late in the game.

In addition he is already familiar with the starting cast and they all are familiar with each other from last year hopefully allows him to be more comfortable…

He and Armaan need to play on the same side of the court.

I think there will be games where we need Reece and Kihei on the floor together, and games where we’re better off splitting them up. Last night, having two elite, veteran ballhandlers on the floor against Baylor’s press was essential. And I think people are really underestimating how much their on-ball defense disrupted Baylor’s guards.

The knock against the Reece/Kihei pairing always was that it limits our offense. Our offense didn’t seem particularly limited last night.

Needed as many ball handlers on the floor last night for sure. Also why we saw so much BVP and wow did he respond

Whole first part of the new Titus & Tate podcast is about UVA. They’re psyched for the Hoos.

I expect him to step it up soon. Certainly BVP is outperforming him (except Gardner leads team in rebounds) in many aspects offensively, but we now know BVP can come off the bench and contribute without losing a beat. We don’t know about Gardner. Also, if we need Gardner (and we do), we want him to get his confidence back. Don’t think taking him out of the lineup helps that at all.

Well the key has been Armaan, then BVP and iMac as a distraction.

Unfortunately that typo is left over from the time my newborn spent in the NICU. Thanks for correcting; all good now though

A little bit like what Manek did for Bacot last year at UNC.

Think I’ve already derived more total joy from this season than I did all of last year. Couldn’t believe what I was seeing in the start of that second half.

We have been shooting the ball really well. I was pretty happy to see Gardner do some work…in the 2nd Half he got a bucket and drew some fouls…i think that is his role this year when our shots aren’t falling…right now the Franklin, Reece, IMac and BVP are hitting at a good enough clip that we don’t need the blue collar buckets from Gardner…

Thought it was funny when they said Kihei Clark is the only player in the ACC that has won a National Championship.

The other thing that was cool was when they spoke about 2019 and they talked about who was the key player to them winning the NC and they said there wasn’t ONE player because there were so many plays that won it for them.

Only it was Ty Jerome. But yes, enormous plays by so many players. Like enormous enormous

Advanced metrics still love BVP

With the win over Illinois, we have now collected our third new pelt of the season. That was the last opportunity for a pelt until the postseason as we’ve beaten our remaining OOC opponents before. But we went three-for-three on new pelt opportunities this OOC slate, which is pretty awesome.

Updated lists are below. I also went through and added all of the new D1 programs so they’re in there too (looking at you Texas A&M-Commerce - we’ll come for you one day!).

Reece’s usage rate being that high is a really promising sign. He has been above 20% in each game so far; for reference, last season he was above 20% in only 8 games total.

Cavalanches decided both games this weekend … a 30-5 run vs Baylor and a 13-0 run vs Illinois at the end of the game.
