🏀 Greenbrier Tip-Off: Virginia vs Butler, Sunday, 23 November 2025, 1400, CBSSN

Everything is fine. Let’s just not play the Greenbrier again.

I wonder about Tillis. He plays like he is dragging a rubber leg around. Coach must be seeing something.

Sorry I wanted us to be a top 15 type team. I promise I won’t be posting in the game threads with those expectations anymore, so no worries for you.

Which is worthless. Vegas had us -6.5 at tip. It’s a bad loss based on expectations and a 15mil roster

Some people are still bad at bullshitting.

This used to be a Top 15 bullshitting board and pretty clear after today it’s just “meh”. No clue what @merch is doing with these subscription fees.

Mallory 4-13. Thought he forced things too much but honestly I don’t want him to ever not be aggressive. He was again making shit happen on offense when things got stagnant (didn’t think our ball movement was particularly good today, Butler’s defense did a nice job cutting off passing lanes).

Hopefully with more time he’ll get a better whistle, I thought he drew a lot of contact on his drives and didn’t get the benefit of many calls. Felt like a completely different crew today compared to yesterday, I know there was still 40 fouls called but genuinely felt like there should have been more. Very physical game on both ends.

I do wonder what the adjustment is. Switching looked much better than drop, but De Ridder cant really guard on the perimeter. I remember listening to the Vandy radio game and every time Vandy had a guard switched onto De Ridder it felt like they scored.

Definitely a team of players who have never played together. even with their limitations, need to get better at communicating switches and on screens .

Still very excited for the season (could be because I thought we were definitely a team that will hopefully see its better play in the 2nd half of the season as they gel).

And congrats to Finley on nailing his audition.

The problem isn’t the loss against a bubble team or barely getting a win against a bubble team last night. The problem is that our defense is not a Top 100 in the country defense so far this season (against mid or worse competition) and it doesn’t seem like mental lapses. It is physical talent lapses, and that can only be improved so much in a year.

Ok? I said it wasn’t a bad loss and won’t be in terms of the metrics - thanks for your nonsequitor thoughts on our defensive prowess

Was definitely sold on him offensively. I know our ball screen defense is probably making guards look better than they are right now but that dude is a menace. A Mallory/Bizjack backcourt duo would be a nightmare to defend.

Seemed like kind of a shit defender but that could also just be Mallory being really good and quick.

Here is my big early takeaway. When we had our last coach, opposing players hated playing against Virginia (for many reasons). We saw the UNCs of the world just give up at times… players will now LOVE to play against Virginia

All new guys and no chemistry or whatever, I wouldnt mind seeing that part change some

We also learned that defensive analytics are true.

The defensive analytics said all our guards were bad defensively and they are, Which makes Odom’s comments about wanting to play like VCU odd. We are nothing like last year’s VCU team (and I actually think thats a good thing overall).

Everything that went awry on them today I think is correctable. Defense is absolutely gonna take some time but like someone else said, in the second half it was good enough to get us close enough.

  1. We have no clue on November 23rd whether the two teams we just played are bubble teams or not, so gauging how we do right now against bubble teams is a pointless exercise. You’re just speculating needlessly.

  2. Once again, expecting an entirely new roster and new staff to be really good defensively in November is a bit odd. I honestly don’t care what it looks like now. I care what it looks like on March 1st.

  3. I don’t see many physical limitations. I see guys, like Thomas for example, who haven’t been expected to play physical, intense defense in the past, and they’re now being expected to. That’s quite an adjustment.

I’m also wondering if picking up full court for an entire season is the right solution.

I mean Butler lost at a very average SMU team and beat a bad South Carolina team by like 7. I feel like we have at least a very decent sense of what that team will likely be, or at the very least what range.
