Post up offense is not efficient, statistically. And we went to it way too much. The beautiful ball movement of the first few games was completely absent today. Way too much dribbling and trying to beat a man 1x1. Really ugly offense todayā¦.
Thatās a good point. A lot of bone head plays today that all of these āveteransā should know better. Only Chance and Grünloh get a pass on that. We also missed an odd number of shots at the rim, just like Friday.
Sorry I was a little on edge earlier. Personal shots arenāt cool, or warranted no matter how heated these threads can get.
The same in game complaints and overreactions are annoying but my frustrations were compounded by the way these games were called. It was just such inconsistent officiating which made for a really ugly game. And then you throw in how we couldnāt buy a bucket when we needed one or committed brutal turnovers at times. Just an all around crap game.
Credit to Butler though - they genuinely played well and hit big shots. they looked like a team with more continuity and they played a really aggressive/tough game that threw us off.
What I donāt get are the posts about resetting expectations. I have no expectations at this point. I see a team talented enough to be really good but also see some flaws that could make us a bubble team if theyāre not fixed. A flawed team thatās still finding its footing is exactly what I was expecting in November but saying we need to recalibrate expectations is kind of ridiculous. If you thought weād look like a top 15 team 6 games then thatās on you.
Would like to see us drop the full court pressure. We had tired legs at the end and it doesnāt really do anything to deter the other team. Iād rather us get set instead of picking up full court and then scrambling to pick up our man. Makes it easier for the offense to get to the rim. We also gotta figure out ball screens but these struggles are fairly fixable, to an extent. We wonāt be a great defensive team, but acting like our defense will suck the rest of the year because it sucks now is lame. Some patience is warranted
Just watched on replay. Havenāt read this thread so Iām sure this is well trodden but:
Defense. WOOF. Not the whole game but a lot of head scratching stuff. Poor awareness. Malik was especially rough. Jacari and De Ridder too.
Our offense consisted of relying on Chance (or another guard) to beat their guy off the dribble and offensive put backs. No real flow. Overall our shot quality was poop compared to theirs.
If we had their shot quality we wouldāve won by 20.
Oh great now Iām reading above and itās people complaining of people being critical. Walked into that I guess. Well, the above are just my observations! Caveat caveat etc
yeah Iām sorry as well for being negative during the in game threads. Just passionate and get worked up, top ten paid roster doesnāt menās top 10 results like embrace said. Iāll avoid the in game threads when Iām getting angry at the screen lol
It was an ugly game in a weird, very slippery environment, from a team of guys who have played 5 games with each other. It was poorly officiated and our best player took a knock to the head almost immediately.
Lots to teach from on both ends of the court. Odom probably got outcoached today, but heās a good in-season coach and I have decent confidence they heāll improve on the deficiencies we saw today.
This was not a sky is falling game. If you told me weād go 1-1 at this event before the season I would have taken it.
Letās just hope the team learns from it and weāre getting the bad shooting games out early.
This is my longer term worry. I knew defense was meh. But we did a really bad job getting good shots. Offense is very good despite that, but itās capped if we canāt get better shots against P5 caliber athletes.
Past two games - 14 assists on 53 made buckets. No bueno.
Admittedly, weāve been spoiled on defense by prior regime, but our guys spend a lot of time chasing their man after the first dribble and off of screens. A lot of timeā¦ā¦.
We struggled off the DHO and ball screens, wouldnāt mind switching there, Onyenso/TDR are not going to play great perimeter defense but itās better than Mallory getting walled by the screen and allowing a wide open three. Yes Butler probably doesnāt shoot 50/40 on the season, but some of that was defense.
Other observation: I get that a loud portion of the fan base wants to play fast, but this team is not good in transition (47th percentile in efficiency) and we keep trying to force it (86th percentile in % of possessions) and we need less 1 on 2 praying for a foul call in those situations.
Not by any means a Hall truther, and he had a rough game today, but worth noting our starting PG played only 11 minutes due to foul trouble, and our best player had blood dripping from his eye for the whole game.
Not pressing the panic button, but the fan side of me that was hoping this was a legit top 20 team is coming back to earth. I remember after last season saying Iād just be happy with a tournament birth and I still feel we are well on track for that. We lose to Dayton or UMD and Iāll start to get worried.
Reading through the thread I may be in the minority here but Iām mildly bullish on Tillis? Drew a few fouls, had a couple back downs that led to baskets which I was not expecting to be his game against P5 bodies. Feel like he will play meaningful minutes in ACC play.
