Northwestern is going to be a good challenge for this new team. They play a different style than us and have a respected coached. Plus the first game against real competition. I expect we will have 2-3 rough 4 minute segments. Will be interesting to see who steps up in a tight game

I think we’ll then beat Butler fairly comfortably. Not saying we’ll blow them out but I don’t think Butler will have the ball within two possessions in the last two minutes. They just seem like a normal team? So far seems we are a better normal team than them

They just put the single games up for sale, I believe they are $150ish. If I hadn’t just gotten back in town I would slide up there.

Interesting take. I’m not saying you’re wrong but I’ve had the opposite take. Northwestern has one very good player in Martinelli who will give us problems (as he does everybody) but I don’t see their guards being athletic enough to hang with ours for very long. I watched most of the SMU/Butler game on TV Saturday and Butler worries me. They are highly athletic at all 5 positions and play more guys than we play. We won’t be able to wear them down like we can wear down other teams. Ajayi is a stud and is having a good year after escaping Gonzaga (he led the WCC in scoring 2 years ago at Pepperdine.) Traore gave us problems last year when he was playing with SMU. Finley Bizjack is one of those guys on the other team that you love to hate. And, of course, you have to love a player named “Stink Robinson.” I expect a tight game and we’ll have to play well to win.

I do think the 4 challengers are

  1. Can our guards do a good enough job at making Reid’s life difficult on the defensive end?

  2. Can our euro bigs avoid foul trouble vs Martinelli and Page

  3. Can our 3pt shooting show up as opposed to an off night vs them having a random player on their team pop off

  4. Can we really exploit Northwestern’s weakness at preventing offensive rebounds?

Three point shooting in a dim hotel ballroom seems like it should be a big issue, but the actual numbers don’t bear that out. If you look at historical shooting in non-traditional sites, the shooting has been pretty average. Players adjust. Players seem to have bigger issues with depth perception, etc., in really big cavernous domes than with repurposed ballrooms and the like.

Virginia is shooting 39% from deep on the season, which is 47th in the nation, but if you eliminate Rider and their 27% shooting first game jitters, Virginia has averaged 43% since then. If Virginia shoots 43% against Northwestern AND De Ritter/GrĂźnloh work their magic in the paint, this will be a blowout.

Don’t know how useful it is as I haven’t watched a second of Butler lol just going based off their torvik and KenPom pages and their track record since Matta 2.0 began. Could be completely off base

Just realized my YouTube tv doesn’t have cbs sports. Is there another way to stream it?

You should have it. It’s part of basic YouTube TV last time I checked

Great news on Tillis

My official comment on the potential redshirt:
“I have no comment on that, and I really don’t like the tone of the question.”

I’m going to project UMES on 12/9 for Tillis’ return barring setback. Lets him get some rust off against an easy opponent then have the exam break to practice with the team as part of the regular rotation, then see 10-15 minutes against the Terps on the 20th, extended run against American on the 22d, then fully integrated for ACC play on NYE.

I really hope basketball adopts some sort of redshirt rule like football… it will help with player retainment in the NIL era if the player can see how he fits in the team schema for a few games despite redshirting.

I don’t see how it would make any difference. As it stands now, you’ve got to re-recruit (well, re-hire) your entire team anyway, redshirt or not.

They’ve been talking about it for a couple years now but with the Portal and NIL and the House Settlement all working themselves out, there hasn’t been the appetite to do another major culture shift rule change at the same time.

How is everyone feeling about this game? I’m excited, but my excitement has been tempered at finding out my wife has a night out with the girls already on the calendar. So it’s me and the toddlers watching this one which means it’s movie night in the Jerome household, while dad watches from an iPad.

Zero clue how we matchup here but excited to see us against some real competition.

I feel like we should win pretty solidly, and if we don’t I will likely have to adjust my expectations and excitement for the season a bit. We may just still need some time to gel, so won’t kill my enthusiasm entirely or anything, but our roster is quite a bit better than theirs imo.

Firs time away from home in a weird setting, I expect a sloppy but competitive game, say 71-66 good guys.

Looking at Torvik…in the natty year, our 5th game was against Dayton in Atlantis. They were 106th at the time (finished 58th).

We won by 7.

Hopefully no overreactions about scoring margin assuming we win.
