We are going to lose twice
Northwestern has had a solid start to the season, though coming off a tight game with DePaul. @DFresh11’s guy Jayden Reid has been good for them, Nick Martinelli has been a stalwart (managing the rare trick of high usage with >80% of his FGM being assisted), and Arrinten Page has good size and should be a good battle for Ugo and Johann,
Tre Singleton is starting as a freshman for Northwestern, was a good choice for him.
Back in the 90s, supermodel Cindy Crawford was the valedictorian of her high school and attended Northwestern with a full scholarship in Chemical Engineering but dropped out after one semester because Northwestern sucks.
Northwestern also sucks at basketball.
They’re 4-0 after beating the murderer’s row of Mercyhurst, Boston University, Cleveland State, and their crosstown rival DePaul. They’re pretty deep, with 11 players getting 10+ minutes per game, and they’re scoring 84 points per game against those cupcakes. They’re averaging 40% from deep but they only attempt about 20 per game. Most of their scoring comes from a pair of forwards, 6’7” Nick Martinelli and 6’11” Arrinten Page. Martinelli is scoring 21 points per game and pulling down 7 rebounds and Page is scoring 16 and grabbing 8 rebounds.
Unlike Marshall, Northwestern starts hot out of the gate: against Depaul, they shot 67% field goal percentage in the first half and nailed 4-of-8 first-half 3-pointers. Page led all first-half scorers with 13 points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting. Martinelli chipped in 12 points, knocking down four of his five attempts.
But the ‘Cats lasted longer with Cindy Crawford than they’re going to last against Virginia.
Watching the ‘Cats defense against DePaul makes it abundantly clear they will be utterly helpless against De Ridder and Grünloh in the paint. Northwestern’s best hope is that the Greenbrier forgets to remove the extra chairs and tables in storage in that ballroom they’re using as a basketball court and Virginia trips over them all game long.
Yeah I really like this matchup. TDR vs Martinelli will be loads of fun. I’m excited to see how Grünloh does against Page. And of course at some point we’ll get to see Chance check Reid. First time to get excited to see how we do this year.
Northwestern uses some funky lineups. Their starters are really PG, SF, PF, PF, C. So Martinelli bounces between the 3 and 4 spot as they downshift going to the bench. Probably Lewis on him to start and often one of the guards. We should get mismatches all over. They play that way because although they have been using a lot of guys, there’s a steep dropoff beyond the top line so they’re just getting their best players on the court. Another blast from the summer past, Angelo Ciaravino, is a starter too, hasn’t done much though.
In part because of those big lineups, they don’t take a lot of threes. Their shooting comes off the bench, what little they have.
There’s been a trend of 3 big lineups. Would be fun to see Ridder at the three.
At the same time, I actually think this will be better for our defense. Think our defense is cooked when opponent is 3 guards on the perimeter who can cook our guards, not slow lumbering bigs and jumbo wings who are easier to defend on the perimeter.
As someone who belongs to the Church of Transitive Property, Northwestern beat Depaul by 2 while giving up 79 points to Depaul. Meanwhile Buffalo, lead by future Hoo and football player Daniel Freitag, beat Depaul by 13 while only allowing Depaul to score 53.
I’m not a huge fan of ballroom games, but the Hoos have a pretty good record playing on flooring intended for wedding receptions. I think we were undefeated at Atlantis in the Bahamas?
Ugh didn’t realize we had all week off. What am I supposed to do this week?
Football bye week too so can’t even doom spiral about how we’re going to lose that
Jayden is a great college basketball story. Very happy to see him ballin
@HoozGotNext making the trip to greenbrier and visiting Montgomery??
I wish I could….those game times aren’t the most convenient. I didn’t try but I know the tickets are quite pricey and hard to get too, such a small venue.
Super cool place when I visited. I’d just stay in beckley if I was able to snag tickets
UVA 25th in T-rank.
Northwestern 56th
It goes with 73-69 Hoos (UVA -4)

DePaul is 92nd … so not horrendous. Maybe they will drop in rankings, who knows.
UVA is #2 nationally in Offensive Rebound Percentage so far this season per Torvik.
They started at #70 in T-Rank and then had a horrendous loss at home to Buffalo.
