šŸ€ High School Recruiting - Fall 2024

I had no idea that everyone outside the top 50 had such alliterative names

Which is fine – this is just a message board. I just got annoyed that me spending 5 minutes looking into this was subjected to a thesis review…

As a separate note, I wonder what it would look like to look at patterns over the years to see how it’s changed from our glory days until now. One of my working theories is that it’s been more difficult to top tier ā€œunder the radarā€ guys because both the scouting and access to info has gotten better across the board. Coaches have a clearer view of what ā€œpotentialā€ looks like in the current iteration of the game and more access to find guys with potential - something we had a greater comparative advantage in during TB’s early days than we do now.

What you might see is a higher proportion of guys in the top 50 getting drafted in recent years vs. 2014-2016. But … I’m fairly sure there’s some variable I’m not thinking or assumption I’m missing here.

I think the covid dislocation to recruiting from mid 2020 through mid 2021 or so provides some evidence for this. It cut down on information.

Not to get to much into the details / specifics, but I think the rankings of Traudt / Bond / RD seem to be a bit off in hindsight…

Natural experiment! Good point.

Eric Reibe from Bullis headed to Creighton. Really good player. He gave Ament some fits when I watched them play each other. Nice looking shot, too. Looked like a totally different player from last summer to this summer.

One more from me before I move onto the allegedly productive portion of my day:

If you just focus on college, check out the covid 5th years in the 26-50 bucket and the 76-100 bucket:

Garcia, JAR, Dickinson, Omoruyi, Coleman (?? is he playing?) (edit - oops, RJ DAVIS, he’s the second potential AA I referenced)
vs
Zeb Jackson, LJ Cryer, Kadary Richmond, Cryer, Matt Cross, Krissa (edit - Jaxon robinson, big NIL $$)

Now to be fair, there’s a lot of NIL $$ in both gorups, but a much higher average in group 1, and 2 guys with AA expectations.

(though, tbh, 2020 is not a good data point for ā€œrecruiting rankings are meaningfulā€ - JAden Ivey and Ben Mathurin, both in 76-100)

When I read the original post, @haney, I had the same idea to look at recruiting rankings as a predictor of subsequent NBA experience. Then I decided that it wasn’t worth the 5 minutes of my time, so I’m glad that you did it for me.

Is it Reibe? Hudson Greer is committing today also to Creighton. (Reibe visited UConn recently. Wish we had more traction since Williford has Bullis connection and Reibe is also from the same overseas program Wilkins and Igor played for)

Oh yeah good call. It’s Greer. Creighton buddy just confirmed.

Recruiting rankings have definitely gotten better, this has been being discussed on the football side for a few years, and I think it goes double for basketball to be honest. They play lots more games against more standardized competition.

We also probably suffer from a good reputation now. Andy Staples has joked for years that he thinks some coaches just wait until Boise State offers someone in football and then they offer the same player, we probably suffer similarly in basketball. If we are in on a guy ranked around 100, it will now draw unwanted attention (although I’m not sure that’s necessarily warranted in recent years).

Stop complaining about data others take the time to provide until you do the same.
Sheesh

Marcel Proust and Henry James aside, I can’t say that I have ever embraced the notion that brevity is the soul of wit!

He missed the last one; you could tell

I guess KD kicked him out of workouts so he can work on his game without feeling bad

I think when we see the pros doing iff season one on one for cameras the defender is just for shadowing (not fore shadowin). Doesnt look like they do much more than getting hand up high on shots

Isn’t there supposed to be another kid visiting this weekend along with Mallory?
