Unfortunately, thatâs where ALL the money appears to be.
Younger daughter is interested in sports journalism/marketing, and weâve discussed how working for a newspaper will hopefully never happen (theyâre dead) and the best case is probably working for a gambling site in some fashion.
Does Tad Boyle qualify for the good-recruiter, bad-coach club (aka the Romar)? Also led the most recent USA U19 World Cup team to a very underwhelming finish.
Iâve completely tuned out the NBA for most of the past year, and watching the draft coverage on ESPN am just now learning that Brogdon is going to Washington - not sure its the best for him or not, but as a Wiz fan and given their proximity to Charlottesville, its nice to see.
He was a beast during the season, but he was kinda old and hadnât performed at that level before. He was obviously draft-worthy but I was surprised he was ranked that highly. If heâd been viewed as a late-lottery (which felt more appropriate) rather than a mid or even early lottery pick, he wouldnât be twisting in the wind like this.
I worked in journalism for 40 years and I teach it now. My kids want to be sports journalists, too. Itâs not the most lucrative field at the moment, but thereâs still plenty of opportunity. Virtually every college team, every pro team, every college or pro conference, every league, every venue (and so on) are building out their content staffs. Itâs not quite journalism, but itâs not traditional marketing or PR, either. Itâs somewhere in between: You canât be critical of your employer, but they donât expect you to be all mindless rah-rah either. I would steer my kids to one of those places before I recommended they work for a gambling site.
