šŸ€ Hoos Playing Overseas 2024 -2025

There’s a Mexican City G-league team? I feel like this goes in Hoos in the Pros. Besides, what sea do you cross to get to Mexico?

Hooping in Mexico City for the G League would be awesome. Getting paid to do anything in Mexico City would be awesome. Jealous.

I’d get paid to eat Al Pastor tacos in Mexico City no problem.

ā€œTop scorer of the day in the worldā€ is a great stat.

Cries at seeing his classification as ā€œsmall forwardā€ instead of ā€œcenterā€ :sob:

Sweden has a professional basketball league? I can’t even name a single Swedish basketball player ever besides the one on our women’s team.

Slightly off-topic but looks like Kihei was hooping with DK Metcalf (0:27 timestamp), would love to know how this pickup game got setup

I grew up in Sacramento, and at the time, the Sutter Club was the big fancy downtown club where people would have business lunches and it had a beautiful gym. When the Kings moved to Sacramento in the 80s, all their execs became members and had meetings there.

My dad became a member around the same time. He’d been thinking about it for a while, and then his regular gym closed so he joined. He was a tremendous athlete in his youth, all Southern California in both football and baseball (he played against Bobby Bonds in one game of dueling All-Stars), played sports in college, and he had a couple friends he’d work out with who were former NFL players. The point being, even at 40 he was pretty confident in his athleticism.

One time, not thinking much of it, he tried to sign up the basketball league. He was 5’10" and basketball wasn’t really his sport, but he thought it’d be fun. They kinda looked at him funny and said, sure, he could sign up, but… maybe he should watch a couple games first.

Turns out, the lunch and evening basketball games at the Sutter Club were insane, full of former pros and D1 guys. They let him play once, and he did fine, but it was kind of obvious everyone was just being nice and humoring him.

Like 15 years later, the older brother of a good friend joined the Sutter Club and also looked into playing basketball there. Unlike my dad, he was 6’6", had been a very solid D3 college basketball player, coached HS hoops for a few years (before getting a JD/MBA and going into business) and was still only 30. They let him play and took him seriously, and he got absolutely smoked.

I haven’t heard anything about basketball at the Sutter Club in years so I couldn’t tell you if things have changed, but 80s and 90s, pick-up games like this were a regular thing there and I assume there were lots of other places that were similar.

Seems like effective immediately? Hope he gets to come back to walk the lawn.

I think the NBL is in their offseason, they go like September-March or so. The Brisbane team account is posting about their players doing well at their offseason teams and they just hired a new head coach, so I bet he gets to finish things out here.

Cool cool. Saw the leaving Cville post right before the welcome to Brisbane one and wondered… that makes sense
