I loved Chris Alexander’s quote before we played them in the elite 8. Something about 40 minutes of ugly. Ultimately we ran out of gas.

I think there’s often a qualitative difference in how teams attack the press in a neutral-ish game vs when they are sitting on a lead; I think the second situation lends itself to settling into a super conservative make-no-mistakes approach, but if you know a team is going to press you all game, you’ll probably look to score directly off the press more often.

In “that game” we looked to score directly off the press (instead of conservatively holding the lead and working the clock) and that was our mistake. It wasn’t so much that the press beat us, but the press goaded us. Which honestly felt worse.

Was SCREAMING at the TV for them to slow down and hold the ball when it was beyond evident that we were in full pucker mode and couldn’t make a lay up.

But we beat that press. Easily and repeatedly.

I’m a little worried about the Illini’s size today. 4 of their starters are at least 6’6. Might need a good amount of Dunn today if that becomes an issue.

They also are most likely going to switch everything on defense.

Back to back these aggressive and athletic pressure teams. Illinois Baylor FSU Houston Texas Tech etc.

Good thing is that we will not face any resistance close to this during acc play.

Yep, that’s why I want to get some play from McKneely today. If he can score a few against these guys then he will be ready for ACC play.
