🏀 In-Season Recruiting 2023-24

On Nova:

Leader Johnson: How often have they kept in contact?

London Jemison: Not that much but they have tuned into a few games.

Nice.

I have no idea if this thought belongs here, but… I am presuming that strategies for the transfer portal are evolving with college staffs everywhere. It’s a brave new world out there. So, does anyone anticipate that we will see “transfer combines” popping up around the country? That is, events where those in the portal, who might not have had as much visibility as they want, i.e., those not in P6 programs, could perform with their peers to demonstrate their skills, athleticism, etc. Or, are the timelines associated with the recruitment of those in the portal prohibitive for such events? Just a bit curious about what others may think.

Could probably do something fun, with a 5-on-5 element at Final 4 weekend. Get a bunch of guys to play in front of the assembled coaches. There’d be various disincentives to playing in it, but it would be one way for coaches to see guys in person.

At first I was gonna say it’s a crazy idea, but the whole NIL/transfer idea would’ve seemed crazy about 10 years ago…

If someone can figure out a way to make money organizing such an event, it’ll happen.

I think the natural organizers for that would be NIL agents, but the bigger players in that (like CAA) would not be likely to be representing the guys who would be most in need of this. I’m not sure who would have both the incentive and the organizational capabilities to do this.

Interesting question – coaches might like the opportunity to see more guys in person, but they probably wouldn’t love the opportunity to have their competitor coaches also see the same guys…

I like the general idea, getting to evaluate transfers. But I actually don’t think coaches would be that interested. Would be the same as the camp formats they hate. Guys thrown together, turns into chaotic games.

Pretty bold of @HoozGotNext to use instagram to bring attention to a game between a kid 100% going to Duke and a kid we most likely won’t push hard for/maybe he gets his UNC offer but not looking likely (they see him as an undersized 4 who needs to develop more guard skills)

I’m not so sure of that. I suspect the those in the transfer portal who warrant NIL deals don’t need any exposure. They’ll have suitors lined up as soon as they announce that they’re transferring. I can’t see too many of them participating. It’s the lesser known transfers who want to be seen and evaluated, and I doubt that high dollar NIL contracts are one of their immediate concerns. Maybe down the road, but not while they’re in the portal.

I imagine the level of a coach’s interest would be directly proportional to the immediacy of his team’s needs.

His rebounding numbers are insane, not just for someone who is 5’9 but for a guard in general.
