I agree with this counter. But I’ll counter-counter with that I like a warm up before I start playing a tennis match, and our vets are still in their warm up for this season. Not disagreeing with you, though, that I was hoping for a higher starting point on defense from our returnees even in Italy. Of course, all of this is based on an observation of a game through Rushdacote’s eyes and keyboard-- they could have looked better or worse live today.
I was convinced one of the 2 would redshirt. If both play well tomorrow against the same team and provide versatility in the lineup, I’m not so sure anymore. And that’s what is needed, more versatile lineups to address matchups.
That’s the usual int’l game - 10 min quarters
If it was 10 min quarters, it feels like 92 points is a ridiculous number of points to give up. Although I’m bad at extrapolating these things.
Nothing has changed my mind yet.
We need very little of Clark and Beeks on the floor together.
We need very little of Gardner and BVP on the floor together.
We need very little of Papi on the floor.
Then to deduce from that - it would mean at least 2 of and sometimes 3 of the following on the floor all the time:
Dunn, Bond, Taine, Franklin, McKneely.
And then add Traudt’s offensive threat at the 5 whenever Gardner plays.
It is high, though 24 sec shot clock means more possessions in the game.
It’s ridiculous to complain about a scrimmage result where we 1) didn’t see it played and 2) have no idea of actual talent caliber of the opposing team.
BUT
Most of us aren’t dummies. We know we’re the same team as last year with some limited upside.
A “W” would have kept that irrational preseason hope alive that we would exceed expectations. But the “L” assuredly knocks the wind out of those sails of irrationality.
The beauty of it is, that may be the direction it goes. There will be changes as the season goes and the kids available play. I just don’t see Bennett after last year letting the same thing happen again. But it will take time for things to shake out. The good news is some of the kinks can be worked out during this trip.
I wonder with the final game Saturday will see the entire roster available. To me, it makes sense to begin the process for fall practices. See what you have as a whole and go from there.
Bottom line for me, I hope today’s game doesn’t cost the program TJ Power. And yes, I am kidding.
The real reason why there is no stream.
How tf is the Italy trip thread at 1127 but the TJ Power thread below 300?
Bennett couldn’t have drawn this up any better. Giving up 90 in the first loss. He’ll be reminding them of this all Fall.
If there was an opinion that TJ Power’s recruitment should be live streamed, the over would have been set at 2k posts.
Say the words Kihei Franklin Papi and “starters” in the TJ group and it’ll hit 2K before dinner
Are you though? Don’t think others didn’t have that thought cross their minds…
Mine was the opposite - He was like - oh they need me.
That thread’s gotta hit the over at some point. Just sayin.
Thinking we are the same team as last year with limited upside is irrational and not really grounded in history imo
It’s a scrimmage and 24 second shot clock, but previous Virginia teams didn’t lose like this - last two seasons have seen a lot of it.
I do think the 2022 class is the beginning of that culture reset.
Also its hard to compare this loss to playing a D1 team. We have no idea the talent level.
I do know the other team has a player projected to go first round in the next draft and a former college player/now euro pro.
If anyone had the thought, they need to stop following recruiting. I doubt a scrimmage in Italy has any impact. Where I do think the impact could come is Ryan Dunn. I thought when he committed, he had the upside to be the gem of the '22 class.
