Italy Trip

Does UNC play zone when Caffaro is in? They might for this reason.

I’m no authority, but I don’t think Caffaro has any bearing on whether opponents play zone against Virginia, or not. Among other things, hopefully UVa has enough shooters this season to create credible perimeter scoring threats. Then, with proper ball movement, and getting the zone to move and flex, scoring opportunities are created for those perimeter (and mid-range) scorers, and that flexing zone defense then creates rebounding opportunities on missed shots, and that sort of plays to Caffaro’s strength. Or, so it seems to me.

Yeah I guess I am pointing out that UNC and others can easily counter any effort by UVA to exploit any relevant movement weaknesses by their star post players. Caffaro is no threat to pick and pop or even pick and roll. Sheds might add that ability and Traudt definitely has it.

Actually, Caffaro has executed the pick’n’roll quite effectively, or a variation of it, in the past. He sets a down screen, the ball handler moves in an arc towards the top of the key, and Caffaro releases to the basket. While it’s never been a bread’n’butter element in Virginia’s offense, it’s something which has been used in the past. If nothing else, Caffaro can set a formidable screen, and he’s had some very nice dunks off of it.

WRT to starting: I think it might be instructive to consider the starting rotation in 2018. I don’t believe that DeAndre Hunter ever broke into it, but by season’s end he was on the floor more than a bit. Then, again, that team was winning almost every night. In 2017, the team was struggling, and Coach Bennett did tinker with the starting line-up after mid-season. I imagine that any changes which might occur to this year’s starting rotation will be more dependent on the team’s performance than that of any one individual.

Dre was the Cavalry that season. We’d struggle and he’d come in and provide a spark. It was similar during Justin and and Anthony Gill’s first season at UVA, they’d come off the bench and more often than not spark the team.

I do recall Dre struggled a bit early but really got it going after he had several games under his belt.

@rushdacote I didn’t say that he actually subdued Ty Jerome and those other guys as opposed to Papi whom he does seem to bench pretty quickly.

I say we need MORE Papi emotion…

Now, I’m just thinking about what might have been had Travis Watson played for Coach Bennett. The mind boggles, which, of course, in my case isn’t that much of a remarkable event!

Made a couple of trips to BH while we were prepping for World Cup coverage pre-2014. The mountains are spectacular. And the city has some pretty fascinating architecture.

Yeah I met him for a hot second, during my 2nd year at a house party we threw on JPA.
