Italy Trip

Sidenote: Salvador da Bahia is 3 just so you know

BH is 3 in metro area population. I know because it’s the reason I came. I wanted to go to the biggest city in Brazil that wasn’t SP or RJ. I searched metro area instead of city-limits population because I didn’t care where they drew the lines. I cared how many people were in the city’s ambit.

BH just under 6 million metro area. Salvador 8th by this metric. I’m not a big Salvador fan but Bahia is amazing both for the beaches (north and south of Salvador) and Chapada Diamantina for hiking.

Just landed in Rio but I have to take 5-6 hour blablacar (intercity ride share) home. My flight from Rio to Belo Horizonte was yesterday on a separate ticket that I lost with my one day delay. I didn’t want to pay the last minute price for a new flight. Italy isn’t over until I’m in my apartment!

Chapada is amazing and Lencois had a really good basketball team/ athletes when I played there. State of Bahia just amazing. Culture is great and diverse depending what part you are in. Salvador can be tricky for sure but once you know it is awesome. There is a manor festival almost weekly celebrating different things

Sao Paulo grew on me over the years. Couldnt stand it at first but got to know it better traveling there for work etc Is also incredibly expensive (Xs 2 of NYC at the higher end) as is Rio. Rio is cool for like 3 days but has to be sunny or is terrible ha

Need to get to BH at some point

Dollar has strengthened a lot against the real in the last decade, so prices have come down.

Got home this afternoon after a strange, erotic journey from Milan to Minsk, er Belo Horizonte. (Rochelle, Rochelle!) Italy trip is, sadly, over for me.

Pass your Brazil tips to Coach Zay. He said he wants to come down here during Fall Reading Days. I told him for just a few days I thought Rio was the clear choice.

Good heads up I will this weekend. Headed down Thursday

Sorry, way late as we’ve had a wonderful long day in Milan, so I’m just catching up.

Two things from the article:

Tony said ā€œwe’re doing some different things.ā€ :eyes::eyes::eyes:

Wait a minute, they took the bus from Rapallo to Malpensa!!?? Did we get footage!?

You could see some interesting stuff in those practice clips from Orange Bassano. Seems to have ball screen / five out concepts. @hoopsandhoos did a bit of a breakdown of it up in the thread.

Here you go:

So it’s tough to say exactly what it is, since it has elements of various sets we’ve run. Maybe I am misremembering but I think @rushdacote noted more ball screen.

He’s going to start the 4 first years + BVP and then have last years starting 5 come off the bench as the second unit

Yeah, we definitely saw a little, but as has been noted once or twice, not much. But Tony saying that out loud seems to give more weight to the expectation that we have for a more dynamic offense with the four and five out sets

My 2 units:
10 minutes each half:
Reece
McKneely
Bond/Dunn - each gets 5min
BVP
Shedrick
And
Clark/Reece — each gets 5 of the 10 min in this segment
Franklin
Murray
Gardner
Traudt

Tony really wanted to run the five-out with Hauser and Murphy, but it’s a complicated offense that relies on cohesiveness, and the COVID restrictions really hampered his ability to install the offense. So he wound up trying it for a few games, and then abandoning it. Last year’s team obviously did not have the personnel to run it. This year’s team should.

I would like someone to explain the 5 out to me

I’m sure there are people here who know it better than I do. Here’s my limited understanding: It’s a positionless offense where all five players are on the perimeter. Like mover-blocker, it’s a read-and-react offense that’s heavy on screening and cutting. Which means that, also like mover-blocker, everyone has to be on the same page – so it’s not the ideal system to install when you have a lot of new players and you hardly able to practice together.

Highly recommend all of Jordan Sperber’s stuff. It’s great for tuned in fans who aren’t in coaching circles.

It’s something we might try for a few games before reverting to sides.

Recently listened to Isiah Thomas talk about how Indiana had no plays during his time under Bobby Knight. Plays make you predictable, he said. Coach Knight I believe was one of the originators of motion offense. Has to be similar is my guess, but assume 5 out no one is posting up ever unless his name is Kihei Clark

In 5-out Kihei sets screens for Caffaro to curl around and shoot 3s

It’s called 5-out because the 5 (typically a traditional center) is outside of the paint and taking logo jumpers

Genius. Get Papi further away from the basket sounds like a great move ha
