Italy Trip

Oh yeah, I agree, he’s doing high level shit. But I’ve seen the loose handle a bit watching way too much Perkiomen hoops last year. Seems like he’s still getting used to that height, a bit, tbh.

Dre also has a pretty loose handle it worked out well enough

Also, maybe I’m wrong but there is a difference between handle tightness and body control or general smoothness. Like Hauser had a smooth turnaround jumper but wasn’t a great handle, Dre fantastic finishing in college without a super tight handle. I think a benefit of the uva system for Dunn is he doesn’t need to take a ton of dribbles

Good point – Loose handle is something you can see on a draft eval and a guy will still go 4th overall.

Luckily ballhandling is one area players can undeniably improve while in college. My bigger question for Dunn is his shot. When he committed I was under the impression he was a good shooter but since they arrived on grounds all the whispers have been the shot is a work in progress

I think the shot is a work in progress. His HS coach even said “needs to work on his 3-point consistency” to Mark Jerome, who said it to Dunn on the podcast. Then we’ve seen @rushdacote mention he seemed a bit trigger shy. My memory of watching him play last year is that he was often less than willing to pull the trigger from out there. And there are no highlights where he’s hitting them (since UVa). But I think he has a nice form.

Agreed here. Wherever he is now it does look like he could become a good shooter

The good news is, we only need him to get to like 35-36% to be super useful. And the form looks really solid (I can dig up the slow no Instagram video again). So hopefully he can just get comfortable.

Now that resident shot doctor @DFresh11 has Instagram, maybe he can give us a form eval: Colby Giacubeno on Instagram: "Got to see ‘22 @perkiomenschool wing Ryan Dunn this evening and despite coming up short, it was easy to see why the Virginia commit fits the blueprint that HC Tony Bennett likes in his players. Dunn has good size at 6’6, solid athleticism and ability to fill multiple positions. He was on the finishing end of 2 lobs tonight, but what was even more impressive was his defensive mentality. He has great lateral mobility, active hands and length to disrupt jumpers or shots around the basket. He’s far from a finished product, but has the tools to be a prospect to watch in the coming years."

Ahhhh right. Yea he may mess around and grow like2 more inches as well. He is at the right place to tighten it all up for sure

Here’s a decent look at his form, vs. Lively’s school. First clip. Stay tuned for the bonus clip where Lively was such a coward he couldn’t be bothered to get back on D to get posterized. Already learning that Dukie media manipulation:

I mean that slow mo and @haney s clip looks pretty dang good to me ha. For guys as long as RD (and Dre) it just takes thousands and thousand of reps in shooting to get real consistent. When you are super athletic AND long there are way more moving parts than say a 6’1 guy that is more compact with shooting motion

From all accounts he is putting the work in and man that Dre comparison becomes more evident the more I see

I am not basing my comments on his poor handle only on this play. It manifested several times in Italy. I just thought this play was illustrative.

I also felt like it was a lot more impressive in person. It made me question if it was even the same dunk in the video

I think the angle of the video made the drive look shorter and the contest look less fierce than I remember but he went from the 3 point line and dunked over a big who tried to meet him at the rim

Makes sense. His upside is insane I think… well we all think
