UC Irvine Transfer Jurian Dixon has committed to the Virginia Cavaliers! In a quick and unexpected recruitment that rings very similar to several of the transfers last season, Jurian Dixon has decided to come to Charlottesville to play for Ryan Odom and UVa.
This marks the first new player to be added to the roster for the 2026/27 season and keeping the streak alive, there is no indication that Dixon made any sort of stealth visit to Grounds before committing.
Relationships factored into this recruitment process, Odom is very close with UC Irvine head coach Russell Turner from their Hampden Sydney days and having former anteater Devin Tillis on this past years squad didn’t hurt.
Jurian is a lanky 6 foot 4 combo guard who played alongside Mikey Williams at an Ysidro High School in San Diego, California. He committed to UC Irvine out of HS and was named First Team All-Big West last year before entering the portal earlier this month. He was named conference rookie of the year for the 24/25 season. He will have 2 years to play regardless of the 5 for 5 ruling as he redshirted his first season.
Roster Fit
Signing Dixon puts the Hoos in a good position. He’s capable enough to be relied upon as a starter, but he also leaves the staff room to chase a starter, being either a 5th year if that’s approved or a highly regarded Euro. I’d personally prefer this route to give Dixon a season to adjust to ACC play before being asked to do more heavy lifting. Either way though, he will be playing solid minutes.
What’s Next
This now gives the Hoos eight scholarship players. They still have room for a few more contributors. A second center and a ball handler are the biggest positions of need currently.
With things ever changing between the 5 for 5 impending decisions and the Euro landscape factoring more into recruitments each cycle, it’s a great time of year to sign up for Locker Room Access VIP!
Offensively similar to Malik Thomas, but longer/lankier instead of strong/compact. Neither are explosive athletes. Neither could really create for others. Maybe a better pure shooter, but not great at getting his own. Unlike Malik, though, doesn’t draw fouls. And not as ball dominant.
Probably most intriguing on defense, where he’s pretty effective at using his length.
This clip here sums up the experience IMO. Gets the turnover, forces it into traffic, ultimately nothing to show for it:
…
Can’t seem to snip and embed. Oh well. It’s the the third game above at ~3:28.
That one stumped me a minute, too. I think it’s textspeak for “what’s good, wahoo nation” (to which the answer is, of course, Bodo’s), but not 100% sure.
Yes, of course, that is the translation, but then you’d have to tell him to get off your lawn, and nobody wants that. It’s OK though; I’m a brother Boomer.
I think Dixon might end up better at this than Malik was; he had a decent assist rate on the season, including hitting Evans for roll finishes. And there wasn’t much opportunity to assist catch and shoot 3s, given that everyone else on his team stunk at those. That’s my optimist take.
Still think he’s most intriguing for his defense at the ACC level. Long, disruptive, gets into passing lanes. Good, quick hands. I could see us trying to be a bit more disruptive on the press with him and/or Elijah.
Had some real nifty shot-making in this one. A little better at creating for himself than I had previously pegged. Can touch the paint. I still don’t see him as a creator for others.
Big question mark for me was what happened on offense down the stretch. It’s the Big West final. Playing for a tourney berth. It’s a tight game. He’s his team’s leading scorer in this game and all games, and … he just … disappeared. Barely touched it, and when he did, he just gave it right back. And it’s not like they were overplaying him. Turner’s fault? Teammate’s fault? Dixon’s fault? Just not his game? My guess at answers: Yes, yes, yes, and yes.
Somewhat more detailed version (just watch the last few minutes, tbh)
He disappears from about 5 minutes to 1 minute
Makes a great play to get a turnover at ~45 seconds
Then blocked by a much better athlete (“Odom hasn’t recruited enough athleticism… drink”)
gets it on the inbounds (40 seconds), makes a nice assist
Doesn’t see it on the next possession. UCI down 4 and Hawaii rebounds with about 20 seconds.
And then … what in the world is Dixon doing? He lets Bullock go right by him with a late and half-hearted attempt to foul, and that’s essentially game.
