I appreciate the wisdom of the crowd, but the staff definitely has more information and (more importantly) more useful information than we have access to.

Things I’d be willing to bet money they have access to (no inside knowledge, just guessing):
- Synergy (been around for while, lines up nicely with most coaches’ desires around film scouting)
- KenPom (or some equivalent tempo-free site); I think JWilly confirmed this once.
- Some set of custom in-house tracked stats that data providers don’t have as standard or would be program-specific (e.g. deflections, quality of close outs, missed rotations)
Things I’m less certain about but wouldn’t be surprised if they have:
- Second Spectrum or some equivalent service that provides player tracking data; I’m just not sure how far these companies have made it into the college game.
- Shot Quality data (this is pretty new)
- Hoop Lens (or some equivalent service that has play-by-play data included for lineup-level info)
I don’t see the staff as particularly tech or stats-averse; they use it pretty openly on the sports science and player development side (think the Catapult GPS system, Noah, etc). They just don’t talk about it on the game strategy side (unlike Todd Golden for example), but they also don’t talk about anything in-depth game strategy-wise unless they have to. But I would expect there to be a lot of filtering of stats info by the staff so that TB only sees the most pertinent, actionable stuff, and probably in summary with other scouting info from film; that’s kinda the job of the assistants.

Yeah, as thrilled as I am with the J-Willy show – because it’s been a huge boost in staff fan engagement – I take about 60% of J-Willy’s stats aversion as schtick (and also a good way to not have to talk about stats)
