I didn’t say UVA isn’t a good team, I said if we were in the Big 12 I suspect we might not have a winning conference record. Sticking with the Iowa State comparison: their conference slate included 15 Quad 1 games and 3 Quad 2 games. Nothing below that. We have a 4-5 record vs. Quad 1, so let’s assume we’d go 6-9 or 7-8 against their Quad 1 teams. If we went 3-0 in Quad 2 that would get us to 9-9 or 10-8; in one case we miss the cut and in the other we barely make it.

My point isn’t to promote Iowa State, it’s to say that requiring a winning conference record is to apply a very strict requirement to a few teams while applying no comparable requirement to others. (Namely, we punish teams for having a brutal conference slate.)

Yeah, Carolina really has put themselves in a bad position, I still think that a 20 win UNC (assuming a win Wednesday), being last years runner up and the “brand” will be hard to keep out of Dayton for the first Four. That said I cannot say with a straight face that they would have earned it.

Am I naive for thinking the UNC brand won’t be a factor for the committee? Probably, lol. But the committee members have to defend those borderline decisions more than any other, and their incentive is to come out of there looking like they have integrity and made fair, defensible choices. (To some extent that’s the NCAA’s incentive as well. They’d like to make money with a UNC game, but the whole business venture rests on some appearance of evenhandedness, so protecting that image should be worth more to them than the sizzle/money of a single game or two.)
