Smart money stays away from those sort of lines tbh
I’m going to disagree. We hit 3 straight 3’s at the very end to get it to 29 which I think was our largest lead of the game. Would have been a pretty painful loss if you bet UMES +28.5. I think they deserved the cover (or we didn’t deserve the cover…however you want to look at it).
Yeah, that’s the thing. UMES played tough, aggressive D, didn’t back down, and was aggressive offensively. They played to win, and it was a surprisingly physical game. But it wasn’t chippy at all, and there were a surprisingly large number of times people would help up guys on the other team after collisions. UMES left it all on the floor.
Edit - They we’re out of their league and didn’t deserve to win, but UMES earned the cover.
All in all, not a bad game, just not a game that would let me use this gif, but I’m doing it anyway…
Instead how bout Clark for 31 min and Reece for 28
And, just for the record: there were really two different versions of the Allman Brothers Band. There was the band before the deaths of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley, and then there was the one after they were gone. I saw the former live, and they were one of the best blues bands I’ve ever seen. The latter version became a Dixie boogie band, and it wasn’t nearly as good. And, for the record, their performance of In Memory of Elizabeth Reed was nothing short of spectacular.
@73CAV On point. I really loved the original band
Caught the Derek Trucks-Warren Haynes version a half dozen times too. They played some pretty incredible blues/jazz/roots rock. Completely agree with your take on the Dicky Betts era.
I’ve been listening to a lot of Derek Trucks Band again too. Had forgotten how amazing their stuff is. It’s a shame that Kofi Burbridge died so young, and that original group of 5 will never play together again. If I can I’ll dig up my DTB t shirt with the songlines album art on it.
59 for Clark and Beekman, 41 for Murray, McKneely, Dunn and Coleman.
What’s the issue?
Guess there’s gotta be something for you to complain about in a 27-point win where the cavalanche hit in the first eight minutes.
Starting in the early 70s I saw them in concert a half dozen times so yes. Definitely make my top ten rock bands of all time.
I was at the game yesterday. More in attendance than I expected. A lot of families with kids taking advantage of the warm day and cheap tickets, which was nice to see.
My first game of the season, so we got there early and watched warm ups. Dunn’s 3 point shooting was better than I expected. Not Kyle Guy or anything, but made most of them and form was decent to good. Dunn reminded me of a faun during the warm ups and game— all arms and legs and a tons of potential when he grows into his body and gets more confident. Traudt rarely missed from 3 during warmups.
UMES had no answer for Gardner— felt like he could have scored well into the 30s if he played more in the second half. Reece is very impressive as a player in person. Has a presence to him on the court. Kadin’s defense away from the basket was better than I expected. Quick and controlled with his body and hands. Not surprised that iMac and Dunn were given the hook quickly in the first half. Defense was bad. Much better run for them in the second half. Not much from Franklin and BVP to comment on.
Not sure I agree with those on here who characterized the game as a scrimmage-like effort. The team was clearly playing hard on defense, albeit with a few typical early season breakdowns, and into the game. CTB seemed to sub generously and early in the second half with a 20 point lead, which broke up the offensive rhythm some before we hit 3 threes in the last couple of minutes. Defense stayed steady throughout.
All-in-all, an easy win and a nice evening at JPJ.
I remember they played at UHall in the 90’s sometime. Can’t remember exact year but my sister and her friend went. Want to say it was on a home football weekend too. Early 90’s.
I agree. I think laziness people refer to was a 6-8 min stretch near the end of the cavalanche and from the remaining starters after iMac and later Dunn got subbed in.
Once the starters came back they were serious and gradually escaped to laxer focus.
The second half was more… normal, I guess. Less up and down and more consistent.
Defense has been really good in the Illinois and UMES games
That quick burst in the first half by UMES was reminiscent of many games where we (and frankly just about every other team) jump to a quick, big lead right from the tip. The other team has a couple of chances during time outs to make adjustments and play better. Yesterday this just happened to coincide with several subs, and I think our best defenders going out. Dunn and iMac had the look of, “hey, this isn’t going as easy as it looked from the bench today or during the Monmouth game.”
UMES has tough kids. Look at their roster: Harlem, Baltimore, Richmond etc. Those guys have seen plenty of competition growing up. Sometimes when you see a young dude come in your eyes get real big too
Anyone else notice UMES coach kinda walk right by TB in handshake line? Haha
I’m a big Kihei fan and I know opinion on here is mixed, but MES really took advantage of him one on one. One team, one game, one approach, but it’s worth noting.
I think it is still a work in progress. It’s improving, but I keep seeing little things which concern me. Most significantly, I keep seeing Virginia’s defenders leaving their feet too quickly, and it’s not just the big men in the post. Guards seem to be doing it, too. I get it that they want to run shooters off the three point line, but, in doing so, it seems to me that the guards are often taking themselves out of the play and opening up driving lanes to the rim. Of course, that may just be me.
