What a slow motion roller coaster! Moved up to 6th, dropped some shots to 9th while Ole Miss had a birdie run, made some clutch birdies but had to sit and wait. Then Ole Miss and FSU drop shots again.
Now we wait to see if it’s Auburn or Arizona State tomorrow.
We’ve lost to the national champion in match play the last two years. Would be great to step up and take a match this year.
Team Composition and Scoring: For team play in NCAA Division I golf championships, teams typically consist of five players, though up to six may travel to the event. During stroke play rounds, only the top four scores from the five players count toward the team’s total score each day. The lowest score among the five is dropped. This is consistent across regional tournaments and the national championship stroke play portion.
Counting Scores: The four best individual scores from the five players in each round are automatically selected after play to form the team’s score. Coaches do not pre-select which four players’ scores will count; the lowest four scores are determined post-round based on performance.
Substitutions: NCAA rules generally do not allow substitutions during a round or between rounds within a single day of stroke play. However, before the start of the championship or between days of competition (e.g., after a round is completed), a coach may substitute a player from the six-person travel roster if necessary (e.g., due to injury or performance). Substitutions are subject to NCAA regulations and must comply with roster limits set for the event. Once a player is substituted out, they typically cannot return for that stage of the competition.
A big challenge for the Hoos today is their 5th golfer has not been competitive in the entire post season from regionals through now… so it would seem they will have to win 3 of the 4 top spots today.
Our 6th golfer -Puregger- who hadn’t planned to play at all - only lost 1Up today… good sign!!
Chang had 6 birdies and an eagle in only 15 holes - was 6 under!
Ben James was down 3 after 4 holes then won 2Up.
Florida and Texas are 2-2 with 4 matches completed - comes down to last individual match which is tied after 16 holes!!
Match has been tied for the last 5 holes.
Florida has less star power than Auburn but they won the SEC championship and I think beat Auburn in match play along the way. So they’re really hot in match play right now like us.
He was 3-up with 5 holes left and lost 4 of the next 5.
BUT - he’s a 1st-year, played lights-out, and I’d bet how that match played out will only give him immediate experience and confidence for a second round today, assuming he’s in the lineup.
