So, they are common enough we have a referee term for itā¦ MCI (Mass Confrontation Incident).
MCIs have proper protocols we as referees have to follow in order not to have litigation brought upon usā¦ the calculus changes whether it is a youth or adult match. The local Richmond referee association requires us to attend a session once a year on MCI.
There are specific responsibilities defined for each of the 3 referees on the team when one breaks outā¦ the major rule for any MCI for a referee is to not touch anyone ESPECIALLY a youth MCI. Itās kind of an oxymoron for the youth, but we are instructed to just let them fight and allow the coaches, other teammates and parents break it up. There are many incidences where the parents will litigate against the referee for putting hands on youths that it just doesnāt happen.
Okayā¦ now to get out of the serious part to a funny storyā¦ a few weeks ago I was refereeing an adult match and halfway through the second half I hear yelling and I think there is a fight in the opposite half Iām inā¦ but what was happening was one of the teamās substitutes were throwing punches at one another. The players for that team started yelling at them and then there was lots of cursing and the on-field players ran over to the bench and started throwing punches.
I stood with the other team and the captain of the other team asked if they had won by forfeit? I told him I had no ideaā¦ I was just going to abandon the match and explain how one team started fighting each other. The league would most likely give them the victory.
We then proceeded to watch this one adult team fight each other for the next 10 minutes while the team I was standing next to gathered their stuff up and left.

Shouldāve let the other team keep playing and scoring while the fighting team wasnāt on the pitch.
Once more than 4 players of the fighting team left the field without the refereeās permission (Yellow Card) and do not return quicklyā¦ it is an abandonment since you must have at least 7 players on the field to continue. In this caseā¦ there were only 2 of the fighting team that just stood on the field and watchedā¦ so match abandoned.

I just clicked on your linkā¦ that dude did not take the trainingā¦ he went in and tried to be the heroā¦ no reason to do that. Just watch and take notes for your report.
Ohā¦ and to save from doing too much paperworkā¦ I normally keep the red cards to 3.
