Nah⦠its just my stupid birthday. Cake days are cooler.
Ha thatās cause youāre old
Picking up the linguistic discussion here:
I think they do have different capitalization rules for last names, for reasons that are beyond me: Tussenvoegsel - Wikipedia
In contrast to Dutch orthography, Belgian tussenvoegsels always keep their original orthography, e.g. meneer Van Der Velde, meneer P. Van Der Velde, or Peter Van Der Velde.[5]
He goes with double capitalization on his IG page fwiw
Thought my refereeing assignment last night was going to be chill, but then⦠VC Red Card
Red Card report has been altered the protect the innocent (or guilty depending on your perspective)
Red Card to XXX HS #2, XXX, for exhibiting violent conduct in the 21st minute. Player was in a 50/50 challenge near the fans sideline just outside the XXX offensive 18 yard box. Ball went out on XXX defender. XXX took offense to the jostling between the players and swung violently with hand in a fist at XXX player connecting hard across the shoulder blades. NFHS Rule 12-6 Art. 1-i
Also⦠a funny, but not funny simulation Yellow Card⦠the roll was Neymar-esque.
Yellow Card to XXX HS #15, XXX, for unsporting behavior (simulation & persistent infringement) in the 50th minute. XXX had just fouled a XXX player near midfield inside the XXX offensive half. When whistle was blown XXX pretended to be pushed down rolling and yelling for at least 10 yards with XXX hands above her head. XXX had previously been warned for several late fouls in the first half as well. NFHS Rules 12-5 Art. 1-b & 1-f-8
Oh man Iād love to see the clip of that.
Question on process here: How do you keep track of whoās been warned and how close they are to earning a yellow for persistent infringement? Or is it just something you keep in your head?
There is no set guidelines on how to do this⦠so each referee has their own technique and thresholds.
My personal technique is the first foul I just call it without a word to the fouler⦠the second foul, I normally run by the player and tell them that is two fouls and they are on notice. In this case, her second foul was purposefully backing underneath a player in the air to knock them to the ground. I blew the long whistle for a more egregious foul, ran over and told her that the next foul would be a yellow card.
Some players will take more than 2 or 3 fouls as their fouls are not the more noticible fouls. As a player I know I had games where I had 5 or 6 fouls called on me⦠but most were a push in the back or an elbow to the side. Those normally wonāt count. The fouls have to be a bit more substantial.
@ElliottHoo Iām refereeing the Albermarle boys tomorrow⦠heard anything good or bad about them?
I secretly hope their cheerleaders throw shit at referees.
Are there Albemarle hooligans I donāt know about?
Yes
I think theyāre pretty good this year, but I donāt know anything about the personality of the team.
CHS is having a great season (undefeated so far this year and #7 in the state on MaxPreps)
I moved away some years ago, so you should be safe.
Ya⦠i refereed them last month.
Iām pretty sure Western and Charlottesville are the class of the area⦠so who knows.
Two games in a row I have given a direct Red Card⦠I thought everyone liked meā¦
Red Card to XXX HS #10, XXX, for using insulting & abusive language towards the referee in the 71st minute. Player was retreating up the field following a no call in the box that XXX believed should have been called a PK. As #10 passed by the referee he said āYou are a fucking asshole!ā Play was halted and red card was administered. NFHS Rule 12-6 Art. 1-e
My 12U team was playing in the state tournament championship game and we actually had really good officials - I was hoping we would, and so we practiced a couple of plays that we thought could take the opponent off guard and would be administered correctly by the Officials. Mainly the plays were on kickoffs and on direct free kicks where we had the first guy go up and fake a touch to see if the opponent would encroach. It worked well enough in the first half where one of the opponents was warned twice, and still wouldnāt listen, and he was bad mouthing the official quietly you could see him, mumbling while turned away from the official. But I could tell the AR was paying attention too.
Then in the 2nd half after one of our players had a yellow for a collision he was just late on, we had a free kick just 5 yards outside the box and ran the play again and the same kid encroached earning a yellow card. He proceeded to cuss out the ref in Spanish thinking he didnāt understand⦠unfortunately for him, and fortunately for us he did and issued a second yellow or immediate red, didnāt really matter⦠So we got to play a man up for the last 20 minutes⦠at the time we were down three to one. Our guys turned on the pressure and scored 5 unanswered goals in the next 14 minutesā¦. Great lesson for our team also to be respectful.
Can a coach talk to you before a game and tell you that they are planning to do certain things that are legal, but appear not legal, to attempt to trick the other team?
In this case, youād tell Dave no, thatās an illegal move, so they wouldnāt try it, but assume it is something legal, just rarely seen. Maybe like the flip throw-in or something like that.
Yes⦠I have high level coaches all the time come up and explain unorthodox restarts they may run to clear it with the referee crew as well as make sure we are aware it will happen so we donāt miss it. Since with higher level games you arrive much earlier to meet & greet with coaches, they all normally have a few questions for the crew before the game and to highlight their style of play. Iāve never had a rec team coach come and tell me anything other than possibly they going to do the fake touch corner play⦠however we only have to show up 10 to 15 minutes before those games. College, HS & higher level competitive teams can be betwen 30 minutes and 2-hours before the game.
