While spending time with family, in my defense.

Hey! I’m reading a book. That Chernow bio of Twain. Only a few chapters in, but it’s interesting.

I was furiously trying to figure out the golf national championship tie breaker rules and the NCAA site was not helpful. Kept hoping it was back up and someone here would know.

Unfortunately didn’t end up mattering, but I wanted to be prepared (and appear smart in my groupchat).

Ah you mean if it was 2.5 to 2.5 after completed matches?

Yeah there was a little stretch there where that was on the table and a few friends were texting about it.

The same issue happened briefly the night before too.

But anyway I did refresh 1000 times regardless

Instead I read this article from the Guardian about lighthouses in Canada

It looks like you can only score half a point in a match in the NCAA championship if your match is tied after one of the schools has gotten three wins.

Basically, it’s a race to three points. The tied match(es) would be played until someone won the match. OK State-Ole Miss went to playoff holes to determine the winner in their semifinal, with two of the matches going to playoff. OK Sate ended up winning both matches, one on the first playoff hole, the other on the second playoff hole to win 3-2.

Haven’t read the NCAA matchplay rules, but it looks like the only way to score half a point is if your match is tied but the overall outcome is no longer in doubt. At least, that’s what I can glean from looking at the results from this week. The only half point scored in this tournament was in the first round between OK State-Oklahoma, 3.5-1.5, OK State won three matches, so they didn’t finish the last match which was tied at the time.

It looks like once a team gets to three wins, everything just stops. In Virginia’s semifinal against Florida, the only match the Hoos lost the point in was the final one. Bryan Lee was Down 1 to Ian Gilligan with three holes to play, but the team outcome was no longer in doubt, so it just ended. Lee could have made up the deficit in the remaining holes, but…

In the Ryder Cup you can score half a point in a match, but that’s also a multi-day event so the reasoning behind that is to avoid making guys play the additional holes because it’ll get solved by Sunday. Also, in the Ryder Cup, the defending champion can retain the Cup in the unlikely event of an overall tie (it’s only happened twice).

Of course, I took the opportunity to review the relative locations of the major urban centers in Ohio, just in case I ever go to a cocktail party.
